Well, no, mainly because I've never heard of such a thing. Where can I find one? Quick search on Google didn't seem to help.

That's not what I'm after. That's a metalworking scriber. It's not a pair of compasses for drawing circles, which is what I need. If only I could work out how to post a picture without going through the rigmarole of sending it to DIYNot admin and asking them to do it, all would become quite clear.

There is a subtle difference betwen a "metal work scribe" and a "metalworking scriber"

That's news to me

can you elaborate? There are pen type one's available (RS) though I prefer the engineering one above

You did mention in your OP that you wanted one with pencil at one end and point at other, several posters have shown this type of compass but you say they are not suitable? I think then maybe you will have to post a pic to explain why.

Still haven't worked out photos yet, so, take a look on eBay and search for vintage helix compass. An image should appear.

The problem here is that the pointy bit has a sort of knuckle on it, rather than a straight point, and that gets in the way when you try and scribe around difficult sections. Hence the need for on older style with straight point (which reaches the parts other compasses cannot reach).
