I have a query as to whether I can re-hang my kitchen door on the opposite side of the frame - the door used to open into a kitchen from a small hallway. To free some space up in the kitchen I now want it to open into the hallway.

I was all ready to do this however my neighbour informed me that they had tried to do the same thing some time ago and were told that it was not possible as it contravened building regulations etc.....

Is this true? All rooms in my two bedroom flat open from a hallway - so all doors open into their respective rooms and not into the hallway so this propossed re-hung door will not hit any other doors or cause any hinderance etc. There is only one external door in the flat and it is not through the kitchen

So is there any reason why I can't re-hang this door as I'd like to?

there are no building reg's restricting you that i'm aware of, only practical ones.

sounds like your neighbour had a quote from someone who didn't want the job

see the "BUILDING REGS IN BRIEF" by ray tricker your library should have a copy

only ref for doors i can find is pages452, 592,605, 612, which seem to relate to fire, access and facilities for the disabled

is it possible for the kitchen diir to physicaly to stop another door opening ir visa versa
in other words is it possible to get trapped!!!

or are there steps involved the other side

A door should'nt open into a kitchen unless it's part glazed . Same reason you don't open a front door out .

i think you may be quoting from a different book to 'Buiding Regulations' uk.

Many thanks for the comments. I had trouble understanding the reasoning in the first place, but the old dear planted a seed of doubt which thankfully you've removed.

Cheers
