Thought I'd pose this question as it's been giving myself and a few of my colleagues some concerns on how to deal with it.

Although an independant; I also work for a company that does a lot of domestic and commercial maintenance... The company has recently employed a domestic installer as a service engineer; he's been with us two weeks and in this two weeks...

+ He has shown that he has never used a Telegan (Flue gas analyser) before
+ Never used a Fluke (Leccy meter) before
+ Has no clue as to how a zero govenor works
+ Took 5 and a half hours to service an Ideal Concord
+ Failed to spot a flue collar not connected - Nice 10mm gap around the flue
+ Corrupted a trend system
+ Somehow managed to work on an LPG fire when he is NG only and failed to recognise the difference

All of these issues have been flagged to the company and we have been concerned enough to even phone CORGI and find out if he is really registered which he is....

What's the best course of action? As the company seem quite happy with him as he appears to be very good with paperwork and CORGI seemed more interested in the fact that the subs had been paid rather than the standard of work

Any advice greatly appreciated.

   we have one clown who took two days to second fix a sink
some of the fools i work with cannot do rads/boilers/bathrooms,one of them had to ask the apprentice how to change an immersion

gg.com have as little as possible to do with this person and leave paperwork where ever possible to cover your buttocks and expose what a plank he is,it will not take the company too long to figure out what a waste of space he is.

We have told the company and so far they have refused to send one of our internal H&S guys out to him even though he is still on probation as they say no-one is available...

Our concern is that this guy is likely to kill someone or himself... We believe that the company do not want to know about his skills as our team is supposed to be 17 strong and we currently function on 9 guys... 10 including this one... We have a belief that they see the guy as extra labour and more profit no matter what his skills...

But how can anyone who installs boilers not know what a leccy meter is or a telegan - The majority of condenser's now need air/gas setting up and that requires a telegan which would suggest that he was probably a 1st fix guy in the former life....

Without the company or CORGI seeming to give a damn - How can we as professionals root these unskilled workers out of the trade without them needing to cause an incident to raise the alarm...

It's got to the point where we now follow up on his jobs that involve technical skills to ensure everything is done safely.... After two incidents already in two weeks - Surely someone should want to hear about it?

Must admit I could not sit down and explain to someone a zero govenor's intricate insides  , but from what you have posted this is the least of the problems

Any boiler service apart from a back boiler, I allocate 1 hr to include full stripped down service, tightness test, WP test and all paperwork and printouts filled in and attached.

As others have said, I would not employ him on any of the points especially 5 1/2 hrs for a service.

He must have been sha gging the lady of the house as well

Certainly sounds like an ex-house basher to me

Well unless to grass up your company Geck there aint much you can do expect do as bripl says and keep away from him, unless you think you can train him up to be a tad safer?

its a bu gger aint it

:)

After recently resitting my ACS. what yu say does not surprise me. Fightening who are already qualified..There is only a few manufacturers who want telegan readings but lets be honest that is a get out. Zero govenors are a piece of **** to understand but unless some one is shown they can be slightly confusing, a lot dont even know how a normal govenor works. Corgi take the money let them deal with it . But don`t trust anything he has done

To pass your ACS and get registered you aren't required to use a voltmeter, or any FGA.
(FGA element coming).
You don't have to have SEEN anything like a Concord
Nobody tells you what tools you'll need, or how to actually do it, or whether you need to break the boiler right down every time..

Lots of people moan about the high amount and cost of training/assessment.
Lots of people moan about the low standard of too many rgi's

If you insist on a fixed amount of training, (as in the recent "80 hours" demands) you don't get enough applicants.

Circles that nobody can square.

Have the polish taken over this site..ive just read the threads..and havnt understood a single word!

Mind you...im a painter!

On its own...about 3 quid.

If the queen is going to be in it, it could come to thousands.

Supply and demand..

I dont have a FGA and wont get one unless enforced to, we were told steamers wernt any more complicated to fit than than a standard boiler so why would I need one.

Dont know what a fluke is, I use a multimeter regularly though.

Why would I need to know how a govenor works, if it aint the right pressure the gas supplier has to fix it, I only need to know how to check it's working at the right pressure.

Ideal Concorde can do in half hour.

Flue collar should have been spotted.

Whats a trend system ?

If you go into someones house to the gas fire you would notice the badge when checking for burner rate and the different smell when disconnecting the connection after switching off the isolation valve, problem is by this time you have allready started work on the appliance plus the guy may have no sense of smell.

He's obviously a **** though and should be sacked.

Just when you thought it was safe, I spend all my time on Horse and Hound or Bridleways forums  now

Gas4you, if you think he s hagged the women of the house in my experiance it must have still took him 5hrs 25mins to service the concord
