Dimmer Switch 2 Way?

Hi

In my dining room (which has a door at either ends), there is a dimmer switch at one door(door 1 lets call it) which works fine and switches the overhead light on and off and dims it.

At the other door(door two) there is a light switch which appears to serve no useful function-I would have thought it would operate the light on and off as well. A mate who is more savvy than me reckons that the previous owners changed a 2 way switch at door one for a dimmer switch and that is why door two switch doesn't work

So, is there a way I can get door two switch to re-operate without removing the dimmer at door one or do I have to change door one dimmer for a straightforward two way???

Thanks

How many wires are behind the dimmer switch? What colours? It is possible to use a bog standard 2 way switch with a 2 way dimmer switch, normally 2 way dimmer switches are the push on/off type.

Hi Spark123 and thanks

There are 4 wires behind the dimmer switch-2 red which go into the top of the switch together and 2 yellow which go into the bottom together.

This same configuration also applies to the on/off switch at "door two"

It could be that the wires are there so you can wire it two way however you'll need to trace where the wires go. I thought there may have been a 3c&e strapper cable which would have had a blue core as well. Is your mate a sparky?

Thanks again

My mate is not a qualified sparky although has a very in depth knowledge of electrics

I am possibly going to need a qualified spark for a couple of other jobs so will ask him to have a look at it-I had just hoped it would be a simple enough DIY job !
