how do I wire up an extractor fan?

I am needing to install a Marley extractor fan in a shower room.

The instructions state that it can be operated by connecting it to a light switch so that the fan will start when the light is switched on.

This would be ideal as there is no natural lighting in the room anyway but I am not quite sure how to go about this.

Does it mean that I have two live feeds going into the light switch, one for the light and one for the fan?

The instuctions also state that I have to fit a double pole fused spur having a contct seperation of at least 3mm in all poles and fitted with a 3 amp fuse. Where abouts in the circuit does this go?

My lighting circuit consists of a junctiuon box type for all the lights.

Can anyone advise me?

I just get fed up when people do not read what is infront of them

Its not a smart a**ed reply. Some people on this forum (who dont get paid for it, mind) have taken a lot of care to put together guides to help with the more commonly asked questions.

This means that there's a good reference and us unpaid helpers dont have to waste more time just typing out the same thing over and over and over and over and over again.

Its at the top of the forum. it couldnt be clearer, its the first thing you see. It says FAQ, Read here first .

Sorry guys,

I did see the link about wiki and I did take a qick look but missed the link to my specific querie.
However, I would probably still have asked the question as the diagram quite clearly states that the set up described is not for a bathroom and not wishing to breach some huge safety aspect I would have posted question anyway.
Putting that aside, I appreciate that people taking the time out to reply are doing so unpaid but I've yet to find a member of the Samaritans, for example, who would resort to sarcasim when the umpteenth person calls in on thier shift to say they've had eenough of life. Mind you, if breezer's diagrams are anything like his wiring, there will be a few less potential customers going about.
We can all take cheap shots in life, breezer et al, but your credibility will be judged on how you judge others.

I have posted previously and still stick by my view - if you are prepared to help then that is fantastic - thank you.

But the thing is that lots of peeps are going to come across the same problems ie 'do you put all the blacks go together at a light switch'...

The blase 'read the wiki' or 'god help us you're a moron' approach isn't condusive to encouraging people to post.

Should people be attempting to carry out work if they cannot work out from the information in the wikki on how to do jobs, surely we must expect people to have a certain amount of nunce, otherwise you could be encourageing them to put other peoples safety at risk.

A general point!

Please be careful taking advise off any Wiki, book or Forum before undertaking your own wiring if you are not 100% confident.

If you do this for plumbing and it goes wrong you get wet and annoyed. If it electrics you might not live to regret it.

There's a very good reason electrician's training takes so long and is strictly regulated by the IEE et al.

In this case if you cannot read a manufacturer's wiring diagram with confidence, then perhaps you should call an expert in. You wouldn't have a quick look on NHS directly before doing fillings on your childrens' teeth!!

If you are prepared to offer help - then like I've said that's fantastic.

If you're bored by the same questions coming up then leave it alone.

Most DIYers probably would have trouble following wiring diagrams a la wiki stylie.

Calling them idiots is also not be beneficial.

If they can't follow a simple wiring diagram, then are they really safe to be tinkering with wiring which they do not understand?

Jimbo,

The double pole isolator goes just before the fan, and should isolate live & neutral. If you get the fused isolator from a reputable outlet it will have the minimum 3mm contact distance so don't worry about that. The live & neutral you need to take to the "fused switched outlet" is the same feed that goes to the light bulb.

No. It means that the switched live output from the light switch needs to go to both the light and the fan (Via fused switched outlet).
