how do I wire up an extractor fan?

Most DIYers probably would have trouble following wiring diagrams a la wiki stylie.

If they can't follow a simple wiring diagram, then are they really safe to be tinkering with wiring which they do not understand?
Exactly! also what is the point in having a wikki for general, often repeated questions if you cannot refer people to it so that they can come back with more specific questions, as in this case, it started with a general question which to answer in minute detail would have taken an excessive amount of space.

EDIT: just seen the dates and realised what was the point of a reply..

The point of your reply was perfect. It was nice to see that although I've obviously asked a silly question, you've managed to take the time to reply to it without an ounce of sarcasm or any evidence of impatience.

Thanks to you and also anyone else who sees this forum as a way of helping people rather than showing how far superior they think they are.

I doubt very much if anyone intentionally tries to "show how superior they are", that is an inherrent fault with trying to communicate via this media, people read different things into the same response.

Let's try again...
From the wiki

I like that one, see how you get the manuf' recommended fuse and fan isolation in one neat package ! It is easy to see how to arrange the cables, maybe not so in a standard diagram.
2+E and 3+E.
