Hi all,

My current boiler, a vaillant vcw gb 221h, seems to be dying (due to the previous house owner attempting a bodged diy repair). I'm looking to replace, as the engineer who has (almost) got it working properly (got hot water now, but no CH) has advised that no-one will warranty a repair, given what the maniac has done to it.

What would you guys recommend as a replacement? I'm looking (as I'm sure everyone does!) for a balance of quality/economy.
We've got 12 radiators (2 large and 10 medium) in a 5 bed detached house.

Could you also tell me how much I should expect to pay all in (Boiler/VAT/fitting)?

Thanks very much for any advice/help offered.

Your energies would be put to better use locating a reliable installer locally. If reputable they will recommend the right boiler.

Even though you are the customer, by choosing a brand and either buying it yourself or telling your installer what to fit may limit those willing to do the job.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, but as I'm quite new to this area I have no idea who is reliable and who isn't. I've asked a couple of neighbours, but no joy. I just want to ensure I get the best I can for the money and avoid being ripped off.

I'm still fuming with the guy who sold the house, as his bodged repair was dangerous. I've been advised to pursue him for the costs (apparently, they have to sign some declaration with the estate agent to say the CH system is in "good working order").

This is a completely unbudgeted job, so I'm naturally wary of taking some guy's expert advice when it is in no way independent (unlike this forum). I've probably watched "Rogue Traders" once too often!

you have watch rogue traders too often

have you noticed how it usually this same blokes who get "done" on it.

get recommendations from friends and family or try your local trading standards to see if they have a "buy with confidence" scheme running

OP, without a reliable installer choosing the best boiler will make no difference, in fact you'll be even worse off if a cowboy b*l**xes up a more expensive one.
