Hi

I am constructing a double garage with a door opening of 15.5ft wide. The depth of the pillar is one brick 8.5inch. I would like to use a pice of angled steel to span the garage entrance rather than an RSJ. Firstly can I do this, if so what specification should I ask for and secondly if this is not the way to go what should I do.

Thanks in advance

Ian

you will need to let peeps know if there is a flat roof , pitched roof bearing onto that opening .

if theres any loading, i doubt you will make any sensibly sized angle work on that span

Just re-measured and the opening is 4.5 metres exactly, can anyone suggest what will be best and spec if possible.

Thanks

Hello again

Just been speaking to a steel supplier and they have suggested an 7x4RSJ 4.9 metres £85 + VAT.

My question then is if the RSJ is only 4inches wide and my brick pillar is one brick deep around 8 and a quarter inch, the RSJ is too short for the width of the pillar and will not work out.

For info I am fitting a gliderol door that attaches to the inside of the pillar.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Catnic do a similar lintel but around £500, can a similar lintel be bought from a steel supplier as surely this is a common thing

Regards

Ian

The common way to do this, is a piece of flatbar, approx 220x10, (or nearest width to what you need) stitch welded lengthways along the rsj.

Thanks

Could you please be more specific, the RSJ is 100mm wide and I need to span approx 215mm wide, do I weld to the underside of the rsj or onto the back of it, if this is the case I will have 315mm.

Am I missing the plot here, please advise

Ian

The flat welds to the bottom flange of the rsj, the toe of the rsj is normally at in 10mm or so to allow for a weld.

The flat would be 220mm wide, then the rsj is say ontop of the flat, 220mm is a stock width bar ;)

Ignore the .
X is the rsj
w is the weld position
0 is the flatbar
