I have asked Safestyle, Anglian, Gardinia to quote for the downstairs 3 windows, One 4 piece BAY window, One front door and 2 side panels, one rear door.

The Bay windows has 4 openers(2 on each side)
The quotes are as follows.

The most unprofessional was Safestyle. 2 sales reps came around and within 5 mins without any measuring quoted £5500. They later came down to 300/window, 500 per door all coming to 3000 if I also had 2 other properties done with them. They said if i didn't sign up they would NOT be coming back and didn't leave a name as they left as i was not going to sign up on without some time to think.

Anyway that night Anglian turned up who quoted 6K and when i told them of the safestyle quote the rep matched the 3000 quote initially. He later phoned me and said his boss would only allow 3650 as the minimum price as the price he quoted would not be passed.

The third quote was from Gardinier who came out around 3700 for just 2 openings on BAY window.

SO having got 3 quotes and some really cheap ones from local contractors who come at just under 3000 I had safestyle in to go for all three properties for 8500 with 3000 for the above property.

Anyway safestyle missed 2 appointments, rang to say 3000 was too cheap and sent another rep who quoted 4500 and said there product was better than Anglian and now they would quote 10500 for 3 properties which seems like a volume discount does not apply in D/G sales.

I have since spoke to Anglian and they will come tommorrow night to fine tune the deal on the one property.

I'm i being quoted a FAIR price for the property above?

The Gardineer product is made by Bowater and is 5 chamber, anglian 3 chamber but 15 yr warranty, safestyle is 3 chamber but reps are arrogant/untrustworthy in my opinion.

Personally I wouldn't touch any of them with a 20 ft pole (thats a stick not a polish person  )

What's wrong with a local firm, they will be cheaper and you don't get all the messing about with prices, you can ask a local guy to provide you with references, if he is a reputable contractor he will not have a problem in providing you with this information.

I had Anglian round for a quote many years ago and I had to ask the bloke to leave as he was doing my head in. He got quite nasty....bless.

Thanks Bilioustrumpstaine for ur reply,

Well the thing is I'm a little worried that the small firms may go bust/wind up and that happens a lot...i know of insurance with FENSA but u can only claim if they go bust...if they are in business they can still ignore u. My brother had a local firm and was forever chasing a receipt and getting a draught fixed from his front door. It's hard to find a reasonable priced local reputable firm.

The Anglian product seemed OK to me plus the 15 yrs warranty and he said they have their own fitters. Besides i would rather play a little extra for our residential property and save on the property i want to sell on.

But for 3 windows, 2 doors and a Bay is 3600 reasonable.?

I'm still undecided and if you think Anglian are useless then Gardinier are a family owned business for 10 yrs and the price diff is negligible i may opt for them...

I have recently moved to a new house in dire need of upgrading. First job is the windows and doors.
By complete coincidence a door to door salesman called just after we'd moved in from Safestyle. Agreed to a quote, waited for first rep who was 2 hours late. had to kick him out as we had to go to work. Second sales rep turned out to be the training manager for our area. He was very knowledgeable and was courteous and left when i said i'd like to get other quotes. (quoted £6300 for 7 windows 1 door 1 patio after haggling)
Local company bloke came next. Didnt bring his sample window just measured up, quoted a price then demanded a hefty deposit. Told him I'd not consider paying anything for something I hadnt even seen so he went and got his sample from the car. As I sat fiddling with it I managed to teach the guy how to use the hinges! He quoted £6k. Haggled but he wouldnt go lower than £5700. Said bye to him.
Anglian never even pitched up.
In the mean time Safestyles Nottingham office had rung me and offered the same deal for £4500 which i thought was reasonable after speaking to friends and seeing how much they have paid for d/g.
As i am typing this the upstairs windows have been replaced and look fantastic. They will finish the job tomorrow. The sales staff on the phone have always been really nice as have the reps and surveyor and now the fitters. I couldnt reccommend them highly enough.

Du a search om the web for fit your own windows which will give you some idea of the cost. Factor in a fair amount for fitting and that will give you a broad idea of the total cost. Armed with this you can then negotiate.

I did this with a local company and got a very good deal on 3 windows, quite big ones, and a door. I was a happy bunny. :)
