Hi ,today a worker on site came looking for a halogen bulb 500w ,he said two had already blown yesterday first one in about an hour replaced it and second lamp only lasted 5 mins.I asked did he touch the surface with bare hands and he admitted he had (didnt know better) and also he had the fitting (tripod type)up in a loft so it could of been at an angle not 180 degrees would any of these factors cause the lamps to blow so quickly ???

Thanks for any answers

more likely to be a failed lampholder. Very common with R7s halogens.

5 mins is far too quick for grease to affrect the quartz, and being not 180 is not a huge issue, providing it is not for extended amounts of time.

The new lamp has clean shiny contacts so lights initially, but soon becomes burned from the pitted lampholder pin, causing it to go off.

I never actually saw the lamp but was only told, think it was run off a portable genny would voltage or over currents from the genny cause a situation like this

if it is a site halogen was the lamp rated at 240/230v or 110v?
in my experience most are 110 and if you supplied 240/230v lamps you would have problems

do you put the glass "tit" up or down? does it make a difference?

( by "tit" i mean the bit where the tube is sealed.. )

im not sure but i put it down, i think this has something got to do with the halogen cycle and the halogen condensing like in a sox lamp ,the little dimples it has

oh ya by the way i was taklking to same man today and he said the fitting was brand new out of box and now is saying they didnt touch the lamp fierce confusion
