I have a customer who's considering installing a gas-fired Rayburn.

Does anyone have any views of the reliability and longevity of this appliance?

AGA-Rayburn are the dogs dangly bits Softus, oh and they will outlast your customer even if thier in their twenties ;)

Fair enough Craig - thanks for that.

The reason I asked is because I have another customer with an oil-fired Rayburn who regrets the day he decided to have it installed. The oil burner appears to be very badly designed and built, and consequently is unreliable.

I'm pleased to hear that the gas one is OK.

Worked on around 30 gas aga`s everyone said very happy with them, biggest problem is from stone cold it took flues around ten mins to start pullin properly and burners would lift off.

Most of my custom is Aga / Rayburn appliances, the casting will last a life time, the burners parts on all fuels will need to be changed from time to time like most appliances but regular service is a must.
Gas models will normally give you no trouble as like anything that has been installed and commission properly, the t/couple and pilot burners tend to be the most replaced parts.
Some Oil models have a higher component rate failure but we tend to find these are mostly the ones that have not been installed/commissioned properly.
The oil models that most people hate to work on are 368k,480k mk1, 480k mk2 the newer 480k mx series are better than the earlier models but still have higher failure rate than Gas models.

Gas Aga cookers have to be put on low burner rate between 30 mins to 90mins depending on which type of burner it is, anytime after this full rate can be turned up to, this will normally stop the gas lift.

Worked that out on first one i done steve. ;) Letter of the law should be cut off if not pulling within about 15 mins on full rate.

yes your right about the flue that is a must if not pulling within the 15 mins i was referring to gas lift of the burner, aga themselves advise leaving on low rate especially on the older gas aga burners.

If flue not taking spillage match then i would be looking into the flue design / route / obstruction more if a regular occurrence on servicing.
