This might sound like a really stupid question, but i'm not great at diy...

Replacing my backplate doorhandles with slightly longer and wider ones (so will have to make new screwholes).

If all is well and all the internal bits fit, is there an easy way of making sure that the door handles on each side "line up"

ta v much

thanks :) first one gives a link to 100s of them - guessing it was for a pencil...?

I usually do them by eye

if you put the first handle on the spindle, you will find it moves (say) half an inch right, half an inch left, half an inch up. half an inch down. Put it in the middle.

you can get a bit of adjustment if you loosen the screws, move the plate a fraction, them tighten.

No, for some reason the link from the picture goes back to the main page unfortunately, it was product 46558 Marking Gauge. ;)

The guy who replaced the door handles before we bought the house forgot one small detail..... You can't wind wood screws into mortise locks!

The top two screws in every handle were bottomed out against the lock body, about 1/8" proud of their countersinks - Great for ripping your knuckles open  I spent a day plugging the screw holes and fitting the right length screws on every door.
