my DIY alcove shelves (How BORING!!)

what do you think?... took me about a day and a half. I'm pleased with the results. AS you can see my room has suffered for it. Dont worry i dont sleep in it and the carpet is going!

I was wondering, do i have to put a primer on first before painting with white gloss?... aslo can i use all purpuse filler to fill in the gaps between the shelf and wall that are 3mm or less - or should i use wood filler.

Good effort !

If you're going to paint the shelves, then I'd fill in the gaps with decorator's caulk using a cartridge gun - this doesn't tend to be sandable but can be over-painted, so do it before you apply the top gloss coats and smooth it off with a wet finger, let it dry and then gloss.

You do need to prime the wood first, before glossing.

thankyou so much. It has definately been worth the 15+ hours i put into it. Im sure i could do it alot faster second time round.

They can definately take alot of weight, more than mine even. Im just gonna put clothes on them mainly though!

I primed them first and then put on dulux satinwood because i was concerned that gloss would turn a yellow creamy colour like it has on my skirting board. Here are the final results, i love all comments. thankyou

You know what, I've been thinking about some floating shelves for some time but never even though about the framework then sheet wood. I was always thinking of thick wood and some sort of long bolt to achieve the same effect.
