Best to drain pipe, cut out bad solder joint, and get the inside of the pipe ends dried ( a wet vac may help).
Then re-solder new joints.

Whatever heat source you use, gas or electric, you need the pipe dry on the inside. There's now way you can re-solder the faulty joint.

cheers for the advice, read some where u can solder wet with electric solder, well damp, not full of water.
can i use push fit on cylinder if i cant solder? its the top pipe which is 22mm going up to vent in loft? its on the 28mm to 22mm joint where its leaking

you will be sat there for a very long time and all that will happen is the water inside will merrily boil away. The only solution is to drain fully and try to feed in some self cleaning flux and solder it.

Even that is not 100% guaranteed to work. Can you cut out the bad section and redo it? Don't waste your time with pushfit - it will come back to haunt you!

Make sure everything is shiny clean before you solder. You can't solder on muck!

if its on a new joint drain the pipe and re-flux and apply heat.
you can useally get enough heat to get the solder to run and add abit more solder to seal the fitting.

cheers guys,i cut out a bit of old pipe, used new on the yorkshire fitting with more solder on,seems to have gone round fitting ok,will give it half an hour to cool.

Surely it is about time somebody invented something, that could be pushed into a pipe (push in with screwdriver about 2" say), that would block the drip. Then complete the job of soldering. Then this "plug" could be heated with a torch and it melts. Obviously something that retains potable water status would be good (please don't say ice ;)

I was told by a plumber that somebody he knew had tried bread but did not know the result of said experiment.

In the same way that you drained the cylinder that you removed.

No.

Lots of people read lots of things in lots of places.

Yes. Or, save yourself a lot of time by cutting out the joint and using compression fittings.

A lot of years ago worked with the council and had a lead pipe to solder wipe ,trick was to stuff a load o bread down pipe which would swell and give you time to wipe a joint , then you blew it out with water pressure, god knows where it ended up but it did work.asked the old dear whose house was in for couple o slices o bread must have thought was hungry and came out with a sandwich tea and biscuits .happy days .

Bread works fine.
