The Op said the wheels and the conveyor will be the same speed .
the OP was describing something that cannot occur so you are wasting your time trying to answer.

Why can't it happen :rolleyes: if you hold your toy on Tesco's conveyor, the contact between the wheel and the belt will be the same speed. if you apply thrust and push the toy forwards the wheel speed will be greater.

Define speed in relation to the original question ?.

There is only one way to measure land speed.

The speed one surface moves over the other

Hence the question is defective and you cannot solve it.

If you don't believe me, try to work out the conveyor speed if the aircraft is moving at 1mph

The aircraft will not move, the wheel is turning at 1mph the surface of the belt is moving at 1mph in the other direction.

The contact between the two is therefor 1mph

now please answer the question I asked instead of the one you made up

The aircraft will move. Its already travelling at 1mph in relation to a fixed point on the ground.
Start up the conveyor and the wheel rpm increases.

If the conveyor is doing the same speed the aircraft will not move because traction is lost

Speed in relation to the original statement was the wheel and belt are the same speed..

As you agree land speed is measured at the contact between tyre and surface, if the two are equal in opposite directions then the plane is effectively running on the spot

Too difficult :LOL: you would need more technical knowhow than me, but if the plane is moving forward at 1mph the conveyor will be less than 1mph

Can you explain how they are at the same speed whilst the airplane is accelerating and moving forward ?.
Do you mean rpm or motion from a fixed point on the ground ?.

The surface in relation to the airplane is the ground . Not the conveyor surface.
When you look at the Mythbusters video you can see the aircraft moving forward in relation to the fixed cones on the ground and thus ultimately take off.

Incorrect.
If the aircraft moves forward from a fixed point on the ground at 1 mph due to the engines providing a controlled thrust then a good control system will revolve a fixed point on a conveyor at exactly the same speed from the fixed point on the ground in the opposite direction.
The aircraft will continue moving forward indefinately until the pilot provides full thrust resulting in the aircraft becoming airborne.

When he defines more clearly what he means by speed in relation to the original question then I consider my out of context quote entirely justifiable.
