Hi All,

I'm planning to purchase some new interior doors, and so I've measured up what size I'll need. It looks like I'll need a door with a hight of 76 inches, and width 30 inches. However, it seems the vast majority (if not all) come with a hight of 78 inches. Is this the industry standard? Do I need to buy the door at that hight and have it filed down to size?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

From watching joiners at work on my recent projects you could cut the majority off the bottom with a saw and then plane it smooth to size. My last house had a door that needed sawingand plaining off every edge, one at an angle. I'm definately not an expert but I think a saw and plane are a must for this job, especially with a couple of inches to take off. Please correct me if I'm wrong, my trade is IT.

78 inches is a standard size indeed.....depending on what construction the door is i.e solid or hollow core(egg box) will depend on how easy the door can be cut to size.
If it is a solid door then you can cut 2 inches from the bottom of the door(i wouldnt recommend using a file...you'll be on for ever  )

If it is a hollow door then you usually find that the bottom rail is very small,so if you cut 2 inches from the door you will be cutting the rail off & taking away the rigidity of the door.To overcome this problem you will have to glue & pin the rail back in or a suitable sized piece of timber.

Just remember if it's a flush ply door then run a knife along the cut first or else the ply will just splinter and look rubbish.
