Here goes. Had to fit a new twin channel electronic timer as the old one died, there was a switch on the back of the new one which had the choice of pumped or gravity fed so I selected pumped. Also did some other work, new filling loop, which required me to drain the boiler, and a new radiator, which required the heating pipes to be drained. I refilled the system following the instructions (lock motorised valve in midway position) The problem now is that the whenever the hot water is switched on the heating comes on regardless of whether or not the heating is switched on. There is no response to the room thermostat when this is happening.
I am guessing the motorised valve is playing up or some kind of safety device dumping excess heat through radiators for some reason. The timer was replaced a few weeks before the other work but not sure when the problem started. Any advice appreciated.

Did you unlock motorised valve from midway position after filling?

No the instructions state it resets itself, and I have checked and can feel the lever being moved by the motor when i switch between heating and hot water

Are both your old and new clock external or was the old one a Worcester integral type?

replacement one is is direct replacement for the original which was the integral bosch twin channel electronic timer. I got the part number from Worcester technical help line

Boiler will fire everytime you turn on tap and continue after to top up HW primary heat store (controlled by store stat). This will take priority over CH so r/stat shouldn't interfere in this mode. If during this heat is passing down CH port and rads heating then fault may be with motorised valve. In any case re-check clock wiring and operation first.

Thanks for advice Nixt.

I think the timer is ok the wiring was a plug in connector, so I think the motorised valve theory sounds more likely. I am sure the timer is programmed ok because a light comes on to show heating or water has come on at the selected time, but the heating light does not come on when the problem occurs. Is there any way to check the valve? I can feel it moving but maybe it is not closing fully?

You can only feel the outlet, as far as you can, downstream from CH port on HW mode. You will get heat transfer but if it gets almost too hot to touch it's passing to CH side.

Thanks Nix

I gave the valve body a few carefully aimed whacks with a hammer and hey presto the problem appears to be fixed. I wonder if maybe I got a bit of grit in the new pipework and it jammed the valve, but anyway fingers crossed it will be ok now.
