Lawn problem

Hi,

My lawn has started to thin a bit and has a few brown patches.

I've noticed along edges where the lawn meets the flowerbed that the grass there grows really thick and healthy. It seems that the exposed edges grow much better.

Is this just a lack of food? Or do I need to aerate or something?

Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have no top soil on your lawn.
The lawn is ok around the garden edges because it is taking nutriants from the soil in the garden.
Fertalizer only won't work, you need top soil.

Your lawn needs Air water and food,

Is the soil compacted preventing air getting to the roots. Is there a whole load of rubble rubbish or other non soil items beneath the layer of grass?

You can check this easily with a garden fork is fine. Push the fork all the way down and wriggle it before pulling it out. How difficult this is tells you how much its compacted and if there is any rubble buried and if the grass has been laid on compacted soil as is so often the case as it 'hides' the problems. Try this in different areas to get an idea of how good the soil beneath is and how much if at all a problem you have.

Aerating will also allow rain to penetrate better.

Most people forget to feed lawns. I use pelleted chicken manure sprinkled around by hand every couple of months or so.
