Gonna get my painted doors stripped. Apparently the firm are going to strip them and then wax them. What is the waxing process for and what exactly is it ? Can I still dye/stain/varnish or paint them after this waxing process ? Many thanks.

Once the dipping has been done you can finish them in all sorts of ways. Waxing is just one of them, gives a nice lustre. This will protect the doors and further wax can be added in time. If they are waxed then they cannot be finished with oil based or water based paints or stains as this would react with the wax. wax is basically a form of grease which paint will not adhere to.
Cheers for that Robbie. So do I need to stop them waxing my doors to give me a greater choice in the finished process ie stain, dye, varnish etc? In other words if they strip and wax I can then only wax them and are there different colours of wax I can use ?
Wax looks great but, as Robbie says, once its on you're stuck with it.
If you still haven't decided on the finish you want, I'd make sure they don't wax them until you have decided - you could always wax them at a later date.

Resurrecting another thread instead of starting a fresh one, so sorry if this is annoying.
Just wondering about this door stripping thingy. I have 3 Varnished doors (1 with glass) that I would like taken down to the wood so that I can varnish them. Can you tell me if a) This is possible & b) roughly how much would this cost?
Trying to ascertain if I would be better buying three new doors or is it gonna be cost effective this way?
Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks again.

Going rate in Gloucestershire is 20-25 quid per door.
They'll need sanding when they come back, glued joins may come loose (look at my last post in the woodwork section).

If you're planning on varnishing previously painted doors, particularly if theres a lot of mouldings, it can leave you with paint still in the cracks, filler, old screw holes and stains.
OK if you're going for the rustic look, but they will never look like new.
