Hi,

A few of our windows (reasonably old UPVC) aren't closing properly because their plastic sliders/brackets have broken inside the channel that runs up each side (don't know the terminology I'm afraid  but hopefully this hard to make out picture will help):

I'm hoping you good people can tell me

(a) what they're called in the trade (asking for 'plastic things' probably won't get me too far)
(b) whether they're easy enough to replace
(c) where is the best/cheapest place to get hold of them

I'm afraid I don't know the exact make of window - they were here when we moved in. Although the windows we have look similar I think they might be different kinds, as some have black plastic sliders (the broken ones) while some have metal ones (still fine).

Any assistance greatly appreciated. Cheers :)

measure the total length and width and pay a visit to your local double glazing place,i think there pretty standard, unscrew the old ones,be careful the window may be heavy and replace with the new hinges then replace the unit.

Cheers. Replacing the hinges sounds like the way to go.

I'll measure them up & have a word with one of the local window companies.

Thanks :)

you may be sorted by now but it looks like a 13mm stack cotswold tophung friction hinge all you need to add to that is the length. and any glazing company will know what you want. but do replace the pair not one as some times you may be given a different make and the geometry is off and will cause a twist in the sash.

to confirm the stack height this is the total thickness of the hinge when closed the most common is 13mm but also 17mm was quite popular at one time. the length is the total length from top to bottom.

not the cheapest option but if you are stuck screwfix do them

oh moderaters you should let me set up shop i have a factory full of the things.

Thanks for the advice wms - you're right, they are 13mm stack / 8" length.

I've bought a few pairs off ebay (for an extremely reasonable £1.50 each) so I'll be fitting them this weekend.
