they should cover in no more than 3 coats if using a decent trade paint. i wouldn't opt for a cheap white emulsion for the first coat.

is this why advice has been asked? if the op was applying a blown vinyl and painting there would be more scope for making it fit in one piece....
you might find that if you do it in one piece the curve might pull the pattern out when you go round the external corner. if you do it in two you...
i painted mine recently just to tidy it up before i buy a new kitchen in the sales. i used zinsser BIN (as i had some in the van) and it adhered...
i would paper the wall and curve in one piece and paper the "was ceiling" to the ceiling in another piece and match the pattern.
with out seeing the effected area i can't comment. guardz is designed for this purpose and is effective giving longevity. thinned oil u/c will...
its not baffling its just your drawing is pretty poor. some pictures would be more telling!
preparation is the most important aspect here. you will as thedec states have to sand the effected areas down to achieve a half decent finish.
another option is something like zinsser guardz, a bit more expensive but a great product for this.

i have used a product called sempatap to help eradicate cold walls. this stuff is not cheep and is a pain to apply. saying that it does do the...
fair point just pointing out that people tend to paint perfect squares with the testers and leave fat edges that need attention prior to emulsion....
a note for next time, use tester pots in an inconspicuous area not in the middle of a wall!! :wink:
