    HONING GUIDES:

Actually I'm quite good with a handsaw, partly because I've had a fair amount of practice and partly because the saws have usually been very sharp. Not so with my hand planes and chisels where I've had little practice and the tools weren't ultrasharp. I've got 2 Stanley planes and in my last...

    HONING GUIDES:

Muscle control didn't occur to me but I'm in control of most bodily functions! I'm sure the Eclipse guide was very well regarded initially and is far better than cheap repros today. But surely better to have a system that's not reliant on muscle control? I've got a KKR guide that has a 2" wide...

    HONING GUIDES:

What a (poor) memory! - 2 years on and I'm having the same thoughts again. Why is it so difficult to make a cheap and effective honing guide? The 45 degree bevels each side sometimes allow the chisel to be held askew – why not vertical as even the cheapest chisels probably have near parallel...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Thanks yet again for your comprehensive reply. Of course, you're dead right and I've been wrong on a couple of things. I did a bit of research since I posted earlier and see that SFix do a 38mm dia. flush pipe (I presume outside dia.) which would be perfect - the internal diameter of the siphon...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

(Actually I think I can answer one of my own questions! Looking at a YouTube video the flush pipe does fit a few inches inside the siphon outlet and although it's a loose fit, it's not an extremely sloppy fit and apparently the pipe coupling nut doesn't need to be especially tight).

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Hi Terry - sorry to bother you yet again but the plot thickens! I dug out some (old) 1½" (38mm) and 1¼" (32mm) plastic pipe - I didn't think sizes have changed over the years but maybe they have? Circumferences are 136mm and 112mm whereas my existing pipe measures 120mm. But I'm now thinking my...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Thanks again. I was a bit worried a quirky 50 years old cistern might have a small diameter outlet that wouldn't accept a modern (larger diameter) siphon. There might well be a flat washer inside the cistern on the base to seal the cistern but it's been backed up with a doughnut dollop of...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

    Seems neither one nor the other? - I believe1¼" has o/d of 34mm and 1½" has o/d of 41mm?

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

It's 120mm which divided by 3.142 gives o/d of 38mm near as dammit.

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Thank you Terry for all your help and advice. I thought I was familiar with1½" pipe and this looked smaller - I attached the photo with the ruler because the photo of the pipe entering the pan seemed a bit deceiving. I think I'll bite the bullet and go for it - it's not a great expense (in fact...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

    Hope you don't say it's 1½", I'm (fairly) sure it's 1¼".

Sorry for the delay, took a while with the photos>

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

It's an internal cone into toilet pan inlet. I'm fairly good at maths so I measured the outside circumference which gave an outside diameter of 38mm giving an internal diameter of approx. 32mm (I believe plastic pipe is referenced by its internal diameter?). I've attached a couple of photos...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Hi - Thanks for getting back so quickly. Yes, I think you're right though I'm a pessimist and always expect the worst! Is it a simple flat washer inside the cistern and what's your opinion on using sealant as well (under or around the washer)?? And IF the cistern would accept a new siphon with...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Hi - it's leaking slightly on the underside of the cistern (on the outside). It's a bit messy with some kind of sealant and presumably a washer or just the backnut. On the inside of the cistern there seems to be a kind of squishy doughnut of sealant - isn't it normally just a flat rubber washer...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Thanks for your quick reply - of course that's the burning question! Especially the siphon tail fitting my existing cistern - the fact there's no reducer to 32mm makes me wonder. If it does fit I could presumably then use a 38mm to 32mm at the cistern end if the pan won't accept 38mm? I was...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

My toilet and low level cistern don't bear any name and are at least 20+ years old. I'm wondering if toilets and cisterns (and siphons) of that age could only accept 32mm flush pipes, does anybody know?? - there's certainly no reducer at the siphon end. But I don't think you can get a siphon now...

TOILET SIPHON AND 11/4" FLUSH PIPE:

Hi to all - I was thinking to change my toilet siphon, a (theoretically) easy job. But my flush pipe is 11/4" or 32mm diameter and most siphons are designed for 11/2" (38mm) flush pipes. Presumably my toilet is not so unusual it won't accept both sizes of flush pipe?? I appreciate I can buy a...

    STRANGE WALL LIGHTS!

I have another pair of wall lights on the opposite wall – these and the offending ones use a 2-gang wall switch. When I switched the wires around the (remaining) wall light on the offending wall switched on and off ok. Which suggests (as footprints said) the dodgy wiring at the wall light fused...

    STRANGE WALL LIGHTS!

Thanks for that. I'm not sure if the cable in the wall is in conduit but my main concern is the wiring from the ends of this cable through the wall light to the bulbs. I doubt the wall lights were secondhand and they probably came wired up to each bulb. Because there's only a shallow recess to...
