Generator to run water pump 150m away, voltage drop

With respect, 2.5mm² = £200 (£146) 4mm² = £270 (£218) 6mm² = £380 (£288) 4mm² is a no brainer over 2.5mm² and 6mm² is about double. In the great scheme of the whole job is it worth the quibble of the larger size? Prices are for 100m of 3 core (2 core), directly off the first hit on Google...

    Is this normal?

Neon and electronic screwdrivers are fantastic devices and I wouldn't want to lose the wonderful facilities the pair of them offer. On some jobs I use them more than other items of test kit. They, and digital camera are probably my most important tools. However one has to learn how to use them...

Generator to run water pump 150m away, voltage drop

Again looking at different on-line calculators for 118m: one says 4mm² another says 6mm², it also depends on choice of cable. Showing the max length of 4mm² and 6mm² 3C and 2C by TLC I don't know if it's trying to do a 3ph calculation but right through it calculates 2.2KW as 9.57A

    Outdoor socket troubleshooting?

Some the socket isn't screwed in, just clamped in place by the front part, I don't see a screw where the white cap is missing, this may be one of that type.

Generator to run water pump 150m away, voltage drop

that's how it was always done... Just think about things like the Manchester Ship Canal for example... Although not worth shifting that much dirt for a piddling little 6mm² SWA ;)

FWIW TLC give 10mm² at 2.3KW

Generator to run water pump 150m away, voltage drop

My gut feeling from experience started at 10mm². for 2.2KW @ 150m First on-line calculator surprised with 4mm² & 4.9%, next couple gave 6mm² & TLC gave me 4.9% I have never compared different sites before but the difference is a little worrying.

    Compass reference ?

Yep. I had line of sight to BBH tx and looked along the boom to point the aerial. At roughly 120° to that line was a 2.5W fill-in mast only 450m away with directional aerials pointing down into the valley. I truly expected to get that mast on a piece of wet string but absolutely nothing. About...

    Temporary power

FWIW, DNO isolated the power to the meter and removed the 100A 3ph head, installed a new 200A feed from the sub approx 20m into a pillar, new head, meter, isolator. From there 70mm² tails into a new DB as planned/negotiated with builder. Seems to be a real bargain at £3.5K for bank holiday...

    Temporary power

Well yes you are the closest. It is a 3 phase inlet but only one phase required for lighting and power in the area the builders were working in, happened to be phase 2, so gen hire company made a cable 32/1 to 32/3 just neutral and ph2... simples, of course earth too. Being an active RCBO...

    Temporary power

The device made by Fanex occupies 5 units in an enclosure. (I'm annoyed I didn't take pics as there was a bit of a panic to get running and a web search doesn't find it) It has a 'rotary' lever very much akin to the original RCD's and marked '0' & '1', this gives a basic idea but looks nought...

    Temporary power

Saturday morning I encountered a 32A/100mA 4 pole 3 phase EDIT non maintained active RCBO. Not seen one before. It is installed as part of a portable generator inlet to a building. Builders hired the single phase genset and connecting cable to do some building work where the mains feed required...

    Damaged Underground Cable

Thinking about this further as I see it at the moment the builder damaged a cable, fair do's it happens. He asked DNO to attend to isolate said cable and fit replacement fuse, very reasonable. DNO attend, isolate cable, replace fuse. Just as requested. THEN they dig up drive and steal the...

Emergency Exit Light - Arrow up, or Arrow Down?

We always used up for forwards... Until we joined the EU, as the common market morphed into, and the French (who had always used down for forward) decided our format was too confusing for them when visiting and an EU wide format was created... Or so they told us
