    Decking or patio? opinions sought

All depends on your soil and ground. I've laid a patio on about 50mm of MOT, 25mm of sand and cement and it's still dead level 5 years later. You want to dig out 150mm below that DPC, then you'll need to dig out more for the MOT/hardcore, sand/cement and finally the slabs. Maybe 250mm - 300mm...

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

The garden tools will create even more shade and trap moisture. That will lead to the formation of mould, moss and mildew. For me, a patio all day long! Utility slabs are far cheaper than the decorative ones and will look nice down there -- certainly a lot less maintenance and faff than decking.

The right to have multiple children

When I was born, my Dad paid for a house which was around 2.5x his annual salary. His mortgage payment (accounting for inflation) was much less than ours. My mother was lucky enough to also give up work and didn't return until we'd reached senior school. It was tough (we rented a TV, my Dad told...

The right to have multiple children

The cost of raising our son (food, clothing, recreation, education, etc. etc.) is all affordable, manageable and prepared for. Unfortunately the cost of having him looked after while we go to work totally dwarfs all of that. £500 a month, and that's only for three days a week (wife has dropped...

    Moss treatment

I agree, it's pretty harmless for most. It can be annoying when it's falling off onto your driveway or collecting in the gutters, but I've seen no end of birds collect it to build nests so I'd rather that that than me get rid of it for something being slightly annoying.

    Composting Advice

I'll have a read of that, thanks. I am going to put a lid over each bin to create a bit of insulation for heat and deflection of rain.

Plastic sheet tacked inside roof timbers

Probably just backing material to stop the ingress of dirt, dust, bird nesting material, etc. etc. Our roof is made up of the original tiles and timber and nothing else. Although lovely and dry up there, everything gets caked in dust!

    Peugeot 406 Brakes

Bit of an update on this problem (car slowing down and brake lights coming on). I have been told that a faulty brake light switch can cause this issue and since searching the issue with different keywords, I have found a multitude of different contemporary cars from the PSA group with the same...

The right to have multiple children

Me and my wife have always worked, we saved up and didn't have a child until we were ready a little over a year ago (he is 1 now). All we are entitled to is £21 a week, which is a mere £5 a week more than my mother was getting when I was born over 30 years ago. To continue working (so we can...

The right to have multiple children

Historically, we have needed large population pools to ensure there is enough 'cannon fodder' for Centuries of wars! It also ensures a healthy population growth. Now our natural population growth is too small, so provided there is future work for those born to families on large estates, then we...

    Composting Advice

Thanks all for the replies, especially @Mottie @JohnD and @StephenOak -- plenty to go from there. I've attached a picture of the 'bins' as they currently are. Excuse the untidiness (bottom end of the garden currently in progress!). The posts at the front still need to be cut down, etc. I will go...

    Composting Advice

I’ve got lots of 9x2 timber left so decided to build an area to make compost. I spend a fortune on it every year but I have been convinced composting is the way to go. I understand what should go on it (mixture of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ materials, layered) but I’m not familiar with how it should go...

Heavy oak shelf into victorian brick wall

I hung my TV low down on a bracket off the wall using some decent plastic plugs (Rawl from memory) and 100mm screws into a solid brick wall on my house. The TV moves a lot on this bracket, and over time a plug at the top started to work away from the wall. I replaced all with anchor bolts. The...

    Train horns

I live 800 yards from the Midland Mainline and hear horns during the day. The trains just passing through and not stopping will (9 times out of 10) sound their horns on their approach. One also sounded it when passing through the station and left my ears ringing for half an hour... I also hear...

    New Car Battery Plant

Could we have negotiated the deal within the EU? I genuinely don't know. If being out of the EU means we can forge deals like this, then it's both a necessity and a benefit then!

    New Car Battery Plant

Good news! We're likely being picked for the construction of a new car battery plant! Yes it's being financed/built by a foreign company who own our former British marques, but it means investment, jobs and money. As a lover of anything old with an engine in it, electric is the future and it's...

Briggs & Stratton 650 EXi Series Never change oil

Change it! I change mine every year. The mowers I use were made in 1996 (Briggs and Stratton engine, also) and 1971 (old Qualcast engine) have had yearly changes all their lives and are still running lovely.

Heavy oak shelf into victorian brick wall

If it were me, I'd use anchor bolts rather than screws and plugs (presuming they're going into solid brick). With the weight of the shelf already fairly heavy, I'd want to ensure pretty much anything could go on there rather than having to remember to only put light stuff on there. Screwfixs'...

Bad news for the UK from the IMF.

Nor me for my maths exams! I agree with the sentiment (this forum seems to be rife with petty but sometimes quite nasty jibes and insults), however not sure why it was edited onto my post. I'm happy to pay more tax if everybody does. I just wish they hadn't made so many caveats to the 'free'...

Bad news for the UK from the IMF.

The IMF have today said that the UK is set to overtake Germany in terms of economic performance this year, so Germany would be the worst-performing 'large economy' in 2023, not us. I'm not defending the dire economic state we are in due to decades of outward investment, but I also don't like...
