    Replacing Consumer Unit box

Thank you Every quote I had for upgrading the whole lot included mounting on a osb type board. Odd that. My inclination is always to wall mount I totally disagree with the rest of your comments however So thanks again all but I’m done here on this thread

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

Wylex Be nice to upgrade in theory but the actual advantage is zero IMO. House is fine on MCBs and always has been. I have no leaks across the system. The box has an SPD. Mind you if I win the lottery I might get it upgraded. But I really do appreciate all the views. It’s why I asked of course

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

Exactly If I replaced the front cover, cover over the mcbs or just the screws. Where do you stop. But in my opinion is that just replacing the case has no impact on the current safety of the installation. I consider myself a competent person as an ex sparky to do such work safely...

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

I can guess the “not prudent” part. Food for thought It’s about semantics. The consumer unit is a collection of components. So replacing an mcb is ok but just the metal box ? I would consider the same. But let’s not go down what appears to be rabbit hole I’ll think about over a cheap glass of...

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

My fear precisely John :LOL: However overexcited I was at looking at 18 I can’t see any specific mention of just replacing the box. But to be fair I fell asleep after 39 seconds. That there may well be differing interpretations doesn’t surprise me. I’ll mull it over and see if a repair works

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

Good points Eric. A new metal box is only £20 - £60 and that’s all I need. The MCBs are fine and there is no certificate in place or required at present. The consumer unit is original from 1989. So I’m not changing or adding any wiring or mcbs . Everything is original apart from the metal case...

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

That’s what I thought. EFL but I would change the box for cosmetic reasons as well as mounting it on a board. That’s if I’m “allowed” to

    Replacing Consumer Unit box

This is slightly odd in that I only want to replace the metal box and not any of the MCBs or tails which are all fine. The consumer box which is metal is showing signs of failure. In that one of the cover screw lugs has decided to part way with the side of the box The box is fully isolated by a...

    12v 2amp 18w twin cable

I thought I would ask here first as you guys are more likely to have done something similar I need to extend the wire going into my fibre modem to a socket. The ONT is about a yard and a half from a 240v socket. The adapter is rated at 12v 2 amp and 18w. Is the usual twin cable, no outer...

    Putty or Silicone ?

I have mixed solvent based mahogany stain in the putty in the past which works ok but it usually needs a few more layers of stain on the top of it to darken it down

    Putty or Silicone ?

Thanks peeps I did find some putty in dark brown. I am replacing just one pane, out of six, in a back garage door. All the others were originally installed with putty so of course I was focussed on matching. So it never occurred to me to use a hardwood glazing bead. DOH! I need to check how...

What finish for new unfinished wooden door ?

I’m having a new door fitted to the rear of my garage. Not sure what wood it will be but probably engineered wood. I was considering staining it to match the exiting mahogany coloured surrounding frame and window But I thought it was probably painted originally. Also stain is not ideal for...

    Putty or Silicone ?

Cant find too many mentions of this I have to replace a small glass pane 30 cm x 33 cm in my garage rear door. I've used putty in the past but with all this wet weather and even though the door is pretty sheltered from the rain I wondered if silicones were a better option ? The doors are a...

New Plaster Ceiling - brush or Roller ?

Makes perfect sense, thank you. I like to keep things simple and I've got the tools as described. Thanks again

New Plaster Ceiling - brush or Roller ?

Hi I've had my old artexed ceiling skimmed and it's looking good. But when it's fully dry should I use brush or roller ? It's a small bedroom but I assume a diluted mist coat first and then roller after brushing the edges would be the normal approach. The walls are rolled and I was concerned...

Fire regulations Loft conversion and extension

Thanks. Just found a letter from the loft company from back then explaining that a conservatory is a no no because the fire brigade couldn’t access the escape window. They mention that a small extension is an option provided access is possible. But would need to be advised Thanks everyone

Fire regulations Loft conversion and extension

Just a thought. Does that apply to conservatories beneath a fire escape vellux ?
