Stand down, found the answer - lime wash (of course). Going to order a tin or two from Mike Wye.

    Paint on interior sandstone wall

We’ve moved. No longer semi-detached but fully detached now! The place we’ve bought is an old sandstone byre that was converted and extended (with block work) in the mid 1980’s. The interior walls of the byre are sandstone that’s been painted at some point in the past, but it now needs...

Can you identify this Oil range cooker?

Done a bit more digging around and it looks like it’s a Rayburn Royal, manufactured somewhere between the late 50’s and the early 70’s when twin hotplates became standard. I got the info from here... http://www.rayburn-web.co.uk/raytech/ident/identroy.htm

Can you identify this Oil range cooker?

Hi Folks, We’re in the process of moving homes (or should that be projects! :D). The new place has an oil fired range cooker - photo below. We’ve been told it’s a Rayburn but I can’t find any online that look the same. There are no identifying marks I can see anywhere. As far as I know it...

    Plasterboard over a tiled surface?

Just a quick update to say that the utility/toilet project finished up looking great and I'm confident that it's structurally sound with no bodges :D All the tiles came off OK and we were able to save a few for the splash back over the toilet basin, a nice bit of continuity from the old to...

    Plastering preparation

That's brilliant John, many thanks. There's no reason why I can't plasterboard over the old door, fixing to the frame with screws and onto the brickwork pb adhesive. I just don't think 9.5mm would go right over to the new door opening.

    Plastering preparation

I'm having to remove some large areas of old lime plaster from interior brick walls. I plan to put on a bonding coat and then a finishing coat. The brickwork is uneven and there's not enough clearance over the whole area to dot and dab even 9.5mm plasterboard. I need a little advice about...

    Plasterboard over a tiled surface?

You've got to get her involved feller! I usually leave my other half with a list of jobs to do while I'm at work. Today she's either removing old woodchip, taking plaster off walls or, of course, shopping! Here's the little lady about to start work. Fortunately she'll never read this post...

    Plasterboard over a tiled surface?

Yes, that's all taken into account thanks Richard. I had to go through the planning permission process for the extension we built and as part of that the new toilet and utility room was included and approved as part of the plan. Fortunately the guy who drew up the plans for us really knows his...

    Plasterboard over a tiled surface?

Many thanks for your replies. I must say I was a little surprised by the BI's suggestion as it struck me as a botch but then I'm a humble DIY'er and not a professional like you guys and the BI. I just wondered whether this was acceptable practice. Obviously not! Considering your replies I...

    Plasterboard over a tiled surface?

I'm currently remodeling space on the ground floor of my house. The building inspector was round today to check the lintel over opening I've installed (which all checked out OK :D ). We were discussing the next stages which is basically closing up a couple of doorways and creating a toilet...

anyone have a legitimate business idea for me

Sadly, I have the shadow of redundancy looming on my personal horizon and I woke up this morning worrying about what the future holds? where will it all end? why me? they can't do this! it's not fair! etc, etc. Depressed, I logged on here for a bit of DIY advice, saw this thread and thought...

    Upstairs rads only luke warm

    I'm pleased to say that balancing and bleeding the upstairs rads seems to have done the job. Thanks again!

    Upstairs rads only luke warm

Thanks for that, it sounds like balancing the system is the place to start.

    Upstairs rads only luke warm

Problem: Our downstairs radiators get nice and hot but upstairs they're only luke warm and it's been the same since we moved into this house about 15 months ago. Recently we had a new boiler system fitted (Worcester Greenstar 30si) which I believe is a combi/condensing boiler giving us a...
