    Steel capping thickness

Yes it is but it also supplies the light in the room I have been talking about (immediately below the loft). This light is on a wooden beam and the supply cable is clipped to that beam. The cable continues into the wall (a different wall from the one I have been talking about), then to a switch...

    Steel capping thickness

There is a junction box under the floorboards in the room below the loft. I was intending to connect to that. I hadn't quite worked it out yet, but I was considering another junction box connected to the one mentioned above. This could be an external type with round entry points or possibly...

    Steel capping thickness

Thanks for your replies. Is there such a thing as oval steel conduit? I haven't seen it anywhere. If I were to use round conduit it would mean either cutting into the masonry or re-plastering the whole wall to an inch thick! Don't really fancy either of these options. If I were to add an...

    Steel capping thickness

Hi all, I am thinking about installing a light fitting in my loft which will involve chasing a cable into the wall in the room below. I understand that this circuit will require RCD protection or mechanical protection on the cable (or both). I have an old fuse box which takes rewirable fuses...

    Wall insulation and mains sockets

Hello, I have a converted attic with a dwarf wall. I have fitted some new mains sockets in the wall but I would like to add some insulation batts to the wall too. Does anyone know how much clearance is required above and below a socket and the insulation? (In case you are wondering, there...

    R-tistic license

Can anybody tell me if it is acceptable to use multiple layers of foil insulation (eg Thermawrap) and simply multiply up the R value of one layer by the number of layers to get the overall R value? If possible, this would be a great space saver! Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Foil insulation

Hello, I am thinking of adding some foil insulation to my sloping roof. Since the ventilation will subsequently be above the foil, should I expect to get condensation dripping off or running down the underside of it? Thanks

    surge protection

I notice that a lot of multi-way extension leads have surge protection built in. Is it possible to get a surge protector which can be permanently wired into the entire mains supply in the house?

    wire stripping

Has anyone got any top tips for stripping insulation from the middle of a wire, as is recommended when adding a socket to a ring?

    max load

Thanks for all your answers by the way. In response to Adam's comment, would it therefore be possible to overload the cable if there were, say, a 30 amp load very close to one end of the ring? Incidentally, I got the figure of 23 from the cable packaging. I guess 27 is a peak rating...

    max load

Why are we limited to 30 amps then? Sounds like 46 would be ok. Also, is the load always split exactly equally in each direction around the ring, or does it depend on, say, how far around the ring the load is?

    max load

My local DIY store sells 2.5mm2 cable which it says is suitable for up to 23 amps. Why is it then that it is normal to have a 30 amp fuse on a ring main? Also, does anyone know how to put the "2" in "mm2" in superscript?
