Loft legs or new timber frame

I know this has come up before and Ive read some of the previous threads on the matter. My 1930s house has 3x2 ceiling joists. But, there are also lots of internal brick supporting walls which stretch all the way up to the loft space that I can use as well if I wanted to sit on some new 6x2s...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

On pointing style, my uneven brick joints did make it hard work to use the brick jointer (the half round style). But it's come out ok. I need to get some more sizes of brick jointers for the various joint widths that are all over my house. Some of the perps were so narrow I widened them with an...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

So you mentioned earlier that the difference between hydraulic and hydrated lime is in how they set. Once set, is there no difference in properties between the two types, so once set, it doesn't matter which you use? Given the OP's house (and mine) was likely to use lime (maybe also with...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

Thanks for the reply. They wouldn't have had pre manufactured hydrated lime powder in the 30s, so they likely would have slaked their own lime. So if you actually want to match the existing mortar mix, is it hydraulic lime or hydrated lime you want to use? Would they have had hydraulic lime in...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

Thanks, hopefully will help others but its too late for me, Ive already started repointing my house in 5:1 building sand:cement (with a drop of chemical plasticiser) to depth of at least 30-40mm (alot deeper in places as old stuff falls out so easily). Ive completed probably 12m2 already. I cant...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

Sorry I didn't mean that to be a personal attack. I just only got a few replies and I wanted to use the correct material for my repointing job. I would have been happy to use some lime in my mix if that was the right thing to do but as you can see from my thread, I only got a couple of replies...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

I'd be interested in your evidence then because I did lots of searching in advance of my repointing job, watched lots of videos on lime mortar including sone which were from the US, and even asked on here myself. There seems to be no advantage to using hydrated lime in a cement mortar mix...

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

But that is only true of proper hydraulic lime mortar, not cement mortar with hydrated lime added. That's my understanding from the research I did (it seems a topic with alot of uncertainty/misleading information around it).

Having some building work - lime mortar or not?

I recently asked about lime myself as I was doing some repointing work and I researched it as best I could. I came to the conclusion that there's no value in using hydrated lime. It's only a replacement for plasticiser which a chemical one can do with a couple drops rather than having to buy a...

    Subfloor void repairs, standing water

Hi, I recently replaced some airbricks as part of an exterior wall tidy up and repointing job. When the old airbricks were out I poked my camera through and had a look at the subfloor. This is from the back of the house looking into the airbricks which would be looking under my dining room...

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

There's already 2 more in the same section of wall, one left and one right see picture. I wouldn't be happy with that, it's another bodge. I'll relocate it when I'm able.

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

I haven't rejected it, I just needed convincing. I'll relocate it to the left side when I eventually get under the subfloor. I still think an unused draincock sitting outside for years is very likely to just be siezed up when you actually need it though.

Would you break off this render? And patio on concrete.

Just dropping my finished job pics here. Pretty pleased with it, never going to look perfect being so deteriorated to start with but I think it's much improved. The existing mortar was like powder, just fell out, I used so much new mortar packing it into gaps and voids. Had to leave the middle...

What is going on with this brick wall? (Repointed?)

I bought a house with painted walls at the back, it took me weeks of work to strip this unsuitable non breathable paint from a brick wall done by previous owners which was hiding badly deteriorated brickwork and terrible quality pointing. It is the height of laziness to paint over a brick wall...

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

Yep quite possibly the drain valve was there first. Still shouldnt be in that spot as if the previous homeowners had the french doors installed they should have also had the valve moved. Their 'step' was a couple of loose bricks with a slab on top. It won't be possible to access an underfloor...

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

How would I ever access it if it's under the floor?

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

In this case they have only fitted one drain, not two as a previous poster pointed out. So if the intention was to fully drain the system they've only done half a job. Draining the system into the subfloor, if it was necessary you'd surely drain as much as possible first off the rads then all...

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

Strange I've never seen this before, I've lived in a number of houses and asked around my friends and nobody has this. I'm still not really understanding what the point of it is. The pipework is all subfloor downstairs and accessing it would require floor covering and floorboards to be lifted...

Do I need to keep heating drain valve through airbrick?

I've never seen an arrangement like this in any house before. Are they usually hidden?
