Installing UPVC Doubleglazing as Secondary Glazing?

Apologies for a late reply, none of my forum notifications are coming through. I can change the timber windows to UPVC via Licensing. Even best UPVC copies look terrible. All my neighbour's have them. I would rather keep the originals and fight a losing battle than rip them out.

Installing UPVC Doubleglazing as Secondary Glazing?

Hello all, My house is in a conservation area The windows are single pane leaded windows. I was thinking of installing standard 28mm double glazed UPVC frames on the inside sills, behind the old wooden windows. Basically where normal secondary glazing would go. Is this workable? Would there...

That's pretty comprehensive advice, thank you. I have a geared gun that I bought a last year (I am sure it had a Japanese name). So I am ready for it. Right, 3 cartridges ordered, only two delivered.....this bids ill omens...

A modern alternative to Linseed Oil Glazing putty?

Hi all, Time has come to deal with some single glazed timber windows. Practically 50% of the original linseed putty has fallen out. I have about a day to get things redone. Considering that linseed oil putty needs a day to a week to become paintable, could I use something like TIMBAGLAZE (a...

    Overhanging Trees from Neighbour

I think your queries are best directed to the council as they would have dealt with onerous neighbors like this all the time. They should advice decisively. The branches do need to be returned back to them. I would strongly advise you not to dispose of them yourself (throw or sell or give away)...

Floor refurb: re-oil or use HardWax Oil?

Thanks for that. I think I will follow the trend and use Blanchon HardWax Oil, then. I would gladly tolerate smelliness, if it is a trade for decent protection. I do not remember it being remotely smelly when I did 60 (!) sqm of oil with a little hand scrubber.....If I tried that now, I would...

Floor refurb: re-oil or use HardWax Oil?

Hi all, I refurbished a house in 2010 with advice on specifications from this forum - NOT ONE THING HAS FAILED. Thank You. Time has come to refurb the place. The lovely engineered Oak wooden floor needs TLC. Now we not only have an option of using oil but we have well designed HardWax Oils too...

Cheapest screwdriver with storage you recommend?

I would probably buy a secondhand older, good-quality ratcheting screwdriver - my Snapon SSDMR is about 30+ years old it is an animal. I think the older Britool and Facoms might see you right. These are engineering screwdrivers, though. They may not respond well to crowbarring.

Painting Acrylic Matt over Vinyl Silk.....update

Thank You, I was hoping there would be a cheaper option now Dustsheets are just giant human-flypaper, in my life. I am hoping to get a decent HVLP or airless to do this, if I learnt to tape and shield properly.

Painting Acrylic Matt over Vinyl Silk.....update

Hi all, Time has come to refresh paint. The walls are Vinyl Silk and I would like Acrylic Matt for the future. I remember old advice to paint over the Vinyl with ZINSSER 123, before Acrylic. Is still the case? Is there a cheaper option than Zinsser, nowadays? I don't want to sand, if...

Can piers be tied rather than built into walls?

Thanks, I dont have a clue about these things so I will probably cough up a premium to get the very best from a decent builders merchants.....I know that sounds a bit dumbass but I dont think I should be experimenting with stuff I know nothing about!

Can piers be tied rather than built into walls?

Ta Chris, they look quite easy to use. I will have a look around for stainless versions and decent plugs. Regards Udhi

Can piers be tied rather than built into walls?

Thank you for that. I think it would be all together less destructive to use steel ties as Woody describes. It's not a point of being lazy but I'd trust myself with doing this properly. These wall ties that you mention, any chance of a reference link? I am aware of the stainless wall starter...

Can piers be tied rather than built into walls?

I would not trust nibs....I assume they are timy bits of wall left to carry the door? I honestly thought that I needed these piers to stabilise everything and carry the ends of the roller shutter which is bound to be heavy? The walls are all single skin brick. At the moment, this part of the...

Can piers be tied rather than built into walls?

Hi all, I have a lean to store room of 3m x 10m by about 2m height. I want to install a garage size door on the 3m wall. It will probably need piers. Can piers be built on their ow and simply TIED into the walls using those metal wall ties? Thank You.

How do I repair a corrugated flat roof?

Ok thank you. I had a feeling it might be standardised but when I do some internet shopping, there did not seem to be any dimensions given for these peaks and troughs. Good thing I asked!!

How do I repair a corrugated flat roof?

Hi all, I have a pre fab garage (a rare watertight one!) with what could be an asbestos currugated roof on it. There is a single ling panel of clear plastic roofing actung as a fixed light. The asbestos/cementitious stuff is fine but the plastic has broken up to let water in. I want this...
