    Joining sleepers on the side

What would be the best way to join sleepers on their side to make some garden furniture? Like this pic I've taken off Google images.

    Floor options to raise 30cm

Why not do a suspended timber floor and insulate between the joist? Wall plates on 2 opposing walls, then joist hangers and joists. Leave a space under the joists for air to circulate and fit a cple air bricks.

    Create opening through cavity wall

It's the wall that seperates the garage from the house. It's brick on the garage side, and hollow blocks on the inner leaf..... plastered obviously.

    Create opening through cavity wall

It's not exposed.... the wall is the central wall in the house.... its not (and never has been) an external wall.... so I don't think they'll be any trays above it anywhere. It's a fully internal wall.

    Create opening through cavity wall

I am weighing up the prospect of creating an opening into my garage from my house. The garage is integral but there isn't presently a way through directly from the house.... I have to go out the front door of the house and in via the main garage door. Typical 1970s brick built house - no...

    New Newel Post Installation

Managed it. First off - I had to remove the bullnose step. It wasn't possible to do it with the step in place. It was fairly easy to remove. The tread was nailed on and came off pretty easy - although I had to be pretty careful. Once I'd done that... I measured up from the floor to the...

    New Newel Post Installation

Thanks for the replies. I decided to remove the bottom bullnose step and I'll dry fit the newel to the stringer and second step first so that I can fit the post from the front. Once it's chopped out for the 2nd step and stringer - I'll temporarily replace the bullnose step, mark the post for...

    New Newel Post Installation

The base of the post had been damaged for many years. The floor has been replaced and boarded over a while ago. It's a suspended timber floor and there isn't any damage elsewhere. Either way..... I'm still trying to work out the best way to fit a new newel post. It's not a task I've taken...

    New Newel Post Installation

I'm renovating an old stair case. I have had to remove the old Newel post in its entirety as it was rotten at the base due to old water damage. The attached pics show what I'm left with - the post straddles two steps and the first step is a bullnose step. My question is, if I were to keep the...

    Heat pump location

Not sure if this is in the correct section or not.... I have an above ground pool and am thinking of fitting a pool heat pump to it. In terms of positioning a heat pump.... are they best located in large open spaces, or would it be better in a large wooden shed.... The shed it next to the...

    Water Charges

I'm with United Utilities, unmetered and council band D - 3 bed semi. My annual water bill is almost 800 quid a year...... UU state the average is about 450 give or take. Does 800 quid seem right? Fresh water is Fixed at £207 x 1.329 and standing charge is 80 quid. Waste water is Fixed at...

Replacing UPVC conservatory with wooden frame

Thanks Notch. I'm guessing it's already 'an issue' because the roof is solid - so I suppose its already outside the classification of a conservatory.

Replacing UPVC conservatory with wooden frame

I have a square shaped conservatory. The bottom third is a dwarf cavity wall and the then it has a standard upvc frame on top and a solid insulated roof. Despite the roof, it's still too cold in the winter. Would it be possible to remove the upvc frame and construct a wooden frame in its...

Living in a caravan on driveway

I'm not bothered about the caravan being there. What I'm notnhappy about is some random person moving into it and living there.

Living in a caravan on driveway

My next door neighbour has purchased an 18 foot caravan and has placed it on her driveway - I'm not particularly bothered by it. However, she has just allowed her friend to move into it for an indefinite period of time. The van is about 4 feet from the corner of my house. Do u think its...

How would you more experienced spreads tackle this little job.....

I've had a normal window opening increased in size down to the floor. This has meant I need to make good the lower half. See pics. Obviously needs boaeding, beading and blending. Woukd you bead from the floor to the lintel, ie over the top of the existing bead and then plaster the entire...

    Laying out herringbone LVT

Finally finished it. Fitting it in between full time working. Happy with how it's turned out and a big thanks to Daz for answering the questions I had. Really happy with the mat. It hides the hatch for the crawl space. I used an 8mm chrome tile trim that I lapped under the ply. It's one...
