    garage building regs

Woody this is an interesting point. However surely I can't have my cake and eat it ? ie I can't very well on the one hand demolish the garage and say it no loner exisits in order to get my permitted development loft, and then on the other hand apply for planning permission to build a garage...

    garage building regs

I want to chnage my hip roof to a gable end otherwise there isn't enough space. The local council have stated they would not allow this under their planning permission rules so the only way to do it is to convert it under Permitted Development (Town and Country Planning Act 1995) however I can't...

    garage building regs

I have an old brick built garage attached to the house that I need to take down in order to be able to carry out a loft conversion under permitted development (crazy but that's how it is). I will then apply for planning permission to rebuild the garage. Does anyone know if I will need to...

    conservatory: building regs

Woody, thanks for this... do the wall panels have to be transluscent or can they be just plain white plastic ? Richard

    conservatory: building regs

Sorry, do you mean that the rule applies as in the plain panels would count as wall or do you mean that the plain panels would be OK to count as "glazing" ? Thanks

    conservatory: building regs

I am planning to (re)build my conservatory with a dwarf wall base. I am aware that to be exempt from building regs at least 75% of the walls should be glazed. As the side of the conservatory is immediately adjacent to a fence the majority of the wall panels are in plain white upvc panels rather...

    Spur

To further clarify, if you have a socket which is already on a spur and then you fit an FCU to "extend" the spur, the length of cable running between the socket and the FCU is technically an unfused spur itself (as the FCU comes AFTER it not before it.) Therefore this length of cable, however...

    Silver / Grey conductor ?

Having repositioned my CU (yes I know its notifiable) I need to extend a couple of cables to reach the new position. The cable to the immersion heater has silver grey stranded conductors. Is this copper, is it steel, is it aluminium....how would I know and what difference does it make ? Thanks

    equipotential zone

Andy I think I understand...the start point of the transformer (and therefore the doemstic earthing arrangement) is tied to earth but due to variations this could be a different potential to earth in the garden. Nevertheless, as I said before, the CPC (from the mower) which conducts fault...

    equipotential zone

Andy could you please explain why...is it just the reduced impedance to earth ?

    equipotential zone

Can someone explain exactly why when you are in the garden you are outside the equipotential zone. If the applicance is plugged into a house socket then the CPC is connected all the way back to the main earthing terminal. Is it because there is less resistance between your feet and the ground...

    Extending 6mm cable

Yes the connections will be inside... is this an accepted practice ?l inspection

    Extending 6mm cable

I am fitting a new cooker control switch to replace a very old design. Unfortunately the cable is not long enough for the new unit and there is no slack at all to pull through. Is it acceptable to extend the conductors by use of compression crimps and if so what colour is the correct size for...

    Voltage Testers

I have a Unitest (fluke) 2000 alpha voltage tester. However the instruction manual is brief and gives little background info. Can anyone explain what a "single pole phase test" is ??
