    Tight 13A socket

Could it be that the back box isn't completely flat/square, and hence the front plate is twisting slightly when tightened right up? Try backing the faceplate screws off a little (just enough to release any tension) and see if that helps.

Replacing CU: 16mm or 25mm SWA?

Yep, that's the plan. Step one is a new CU and first lighting circuit. Then the rest can be transferred over/extended as we work through the house. End game is nothing left of the old mess. Surely if the reg's stipulate then we need it? Being pedantic about it obviously but my logic is if...

Replacing CU: 16mm or 25mm SWA?

I suspect the differing opinions is driven by the fact I’m close to this perceived threshold of 3m. There’s already about 3 different flavours of switch and switch fuse between the service head and existing CU! It’s a right bugger’s muddle! If I’m understanding all this so far: we don’t need...

Moved house - system boiler & water tank programmer settings

Not sure what is wrong with the photos - they work on my computer browser but not mobile browser. Anyway, a bit more digging through the manual for the cylinder and I now understand how to set the temp for the water. Next step is to get some better controls installed - I’ve created a new...

Replacing old Honeywell controls with ???

As per the title, we've moved in to a house with a pretty old system comprising unvented tank and system boiler. It's currently controlled by a Honeywell of some sort - not sure of the exact model number (see photo below.) This is hardwired back to the system via a disaster of a wiring centre...

Replacing CU: 16mm or 25mm SWA?

The saga continues (well, it hasn't really started yet as still in initial planning talks with different sparks.) To build on the above, 1 spark has told me I must use SWA for the connection from meter to new CU due to the length. Another says long tails are fine. I assume there is clear...

Moved house - system boiler & water tank programmer settings

Finally had more time to investigate and follow up on this... Been and taken some pictures of the delights of my installation. I particularly like the wiring centre... The lovely plumbing coming out of the system boiler. Can see the 2 motorised valves for what I'm assuming is an...

Replacing CU: 16mm or 25mm SWA?

Thanks for all of the answers so far folks, appreciate it. Both sparks said SWA - I was surprised as the new run will be under floorboards, clipped to a length of wood acting as a tray. As mentioned, the meter and proposed new CU are approx. 3m allowing some slack. In my head, knowing that EV...

Replacing CU: 16mm or 25mm SWA?

Hey knowledgeable folks. Currently exploring what's needed to replace a very (VERY!) old CU. Early stages, so only rough conversations with some local sparks to get their opinions and already hit an immediate conflict. We have a 100amp fuse on the service cut-out, feeding into main isolator via...

Moved house - system boiler & water tank programmer settings

Thanks so much for all of the replies. Not had a chance to come back to reply to them before now as still unpacking boxes everywhere! So, some more info. and responses to comments so far: The system boiler and cylinder are both down in a very large, slightly damp cellar. There is almost zero...

Moved house - system boiler & water tank programmer settings

Morning. I’ve moved house and the new place has a different heating and hot water setup than I am used to (came from a combi controlled by Hive.) We now have a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 40CDi system boiler and a Megaflow indirect water tank with 170l capacity. All appears to work as expected. I...

New wireless alarm: Visonic, Pyronix, Texecom or ???

For monitoring, I'm not bothered about text or voice - an app with push notifications/email via home broadband will suffice. My broadband will have failover with GSM to engineer out that problem. I went for Visonic last time due to PIR's with cameras built in for internal coverage. Turns out the...

New wireless alarm: Visonic, Pyronix, Texecom or ???

Folks, we’re moving house imminently and the new place will need a new alarm system installed. I will be doing this myself. I last installed a Visonic Powermaster-30 in our current house which has been faultless, the only niggle being a very laggy mobile app, which needs a third party host as a...

    Visonic gone?

Are they still operating as Visonic or being rolled into the parent brand?

EV Charger install alongside old CU

Hi Folks, Hopefully moving into an old Grade II listed house this year. Currently at the planning/budgeting/despairing stage! The house will need a full rewire. We don't want to do this until we've figured out what we want/need in terms of kitchen, bathrooms, heating, etc. etc. It currently has...

    Structural Correction of old roof

We, luckily, don't need to extend or alter any of the structure of the house - its one of its appeals. So we're very much in the realms of maintenance and fixing. I need to get up into the loft and have a proper look as/when we get in and get an engineer in to review beforehand. @datarebal...

    Structural Correction of old roof

Thanks Woody. To be fair, our surveyor is pretty clued up on old houses and his report pretty much says as you have commented - that the lack of wall plate, ties, etc. is not uncommon and not necessarily an issue given the age and design of the roof. He has commented that some of the rafters...

    Structural Correction of old roof

Hi folks, We're hopefully going to be completing on a purchase and move to a big old Grade 2 listed house sometime this year. We've had a very extensive heritage survey completed (which was better than expected!) and one of the major issues it has highlighted is for one of the roofs on a...
