    Fireplace advice

Installing a solid fuel fireplace needs doing by a registered competent person who can self certify, or certifying via building control. I'd suggest the former. I'd suggest you return the concrete insert and await the specification from a professional installer. I'd also suggest you consider a...

Do we have lintels above windows?

Of course there are lintels above the windows, doesn't mean you can fit blinds though! I'd always side fix blinds though, if they're the kind you'll be pulling down on. The fixing will be better positioned to resist the force. Drill a hole to see what you're dealing with before choosing a...

    How to add insulation here

Ok, so I'm resigned to taking out that section of ceiling, instead of removing the roof and going in from above. I'll DIY up to reboarding, so I'm now considering PIR vs. loft roll. It strikes me PIR will be easier to install, but never having done it would appreciate thoughts.

    How to add insulation here

The final acceptance battle has been fought. I won't be re-opening that again. Wish I had been aware of this at the time.

    How to add insulation here

I was wondering if polystyrene beads would be (a) effective and (b) safe around the down lights?

    How to add insulation here

Just popped out a light and shone a torch in there. No insulation for sure. There is a breathable membrane under the tiles though. The main extension was huge and they had tonnes of loft roll knocking about, so I think it was just an oversight.

    How to add insulation here

My builder didn't add any insulation into the small sloping roof void above my ground floor extension. BC signed it off and builders are long gone so that's not an option, but the room gets really cold. Is there any DIY way to add it retrospectively? There's a couple of LED down lighters in that...

    Decking fascia boards

Most decking boards are ribbed on one side and smooth (or smoother) on the other. Apparently the ribs are supposed to be down, to create airflow where board meets joist. They also look better that way, but that's a matter of opinion of course.

    Decking fascia boards

If you're going to do that it'll look much nicer if you mitre the corners. Also, IMHO you've put your boards upside down, but I expect you did that on purpose out of personal preference.

Cunning ideas to fix my keys

3 of my front door keys have failed like this. The plastic shoe that the metal sits in basically split and crumbled away. Can anyone think of a clever way to make them useable? I was thinking a couple of 2p coins and gorilla glue.

    Dodgy waste pipe connection

Thanks for the help everyone. I fished out the washer and it was a very mangled version of the thing Hugh linked above. When I followed your installation instructions I could get a water tight seal, but will get a couple of spare washers anyway because that thing really shouldn't have been reused.

    Dodgy waste pipe connection

Is this it, stuffed down inside the fitting, or is there a second rubber in there too? I'm wondering if Mr muscle sink unblocker could have dissolved the rubber, hence the black goo at the end of the pipe? Unblocking the waste pipe is why dismantled it in the first place.

    Dodgy waste pipe connection

Just realised that the existing elbow shown in my first post is mcalpine multifit. So how are these supposed to make a seal? I feel like mine is missing a rubber seal, or it's become stuffed down into the fitting.

    Dodgy waste pipe connection

Feels like I need one of these only with a threaded end where the coupling nut is https://www.macdonaldplumbingsupplies.com/soil-waste-c7/mcalpine-c903/mcalpine-plastic-fittings-c896/mcalpine-multifit-fittings-c944/mcalpine-t5m-a-95-degree-multifit-bend-x-bsp-coupling-nut-1-p2755/s6808

It lines up but I just can't get a good connection to the solvent weld cut end.

    Dodgy waste pipe connection

So I guess the magic part there is the multifit connector on the outlet? If I just want to reinstall the U-bend do you know if there is a 90 degree elbow which is "multifit" one end and "normal" (screw up compression type) on the other?

    Dodgy waste pipe connection

I've just removed the kitchen sink u-bend and the connection to the 43mm (OD) waste pipe drain looks to be a right dog's dinner. The end of the waste pipe isn't cut cleanly, and the white threaded connector that was on there doesn't grip at all. There appears to be black gunk where the O-ring...

Gluing pine strip wood to zinc plated bracket

I can now confirm that "sticks like" does indeed stick like the proverbial between primed stripwood and a zinc plated bracket.

Difference between a domestic and 'industrial' dehumidifier

Oh and to answer the question, the difference is night Vs day. Unbelievably loud though, and you need to be able to seal the space off.
