Removing paint from marble fire surround

Hi there I have just ripped away some ugly hardboard to uncover a lovely fireplace. The surround is black marble, but it has been painted with cream paint! The paint comes off easily if I just scrape it with my fingernail. What's the best way to remove the paint without damaging the marble...

    Bring back hanging!!

I'm assuming that you got the figures from the same report? If not - source please. I actually think those figures demonstrate something that is well established - that if you are convicted of a crime, you are more likely to go to prison for it if you are black/asian. I think to see...

    Bring back hanging!!

Not unfashionable, just plain wrong. The vast majority of crime is carried out by white people. Percentage breakdown of those arrested for notifiable offences, by ethnic appearance, offence group 2007/08 in England & Wales Violence against the person 82.9% White (W) 8.5% Black (B)...

    Is Part P Being Ignored?

I'm looking to get some rewiring done. I know that I need to hire a Part P registered electrician or go the building regs route. But while I've been doing some research and talking to friends who've had work done, it seems to me a lot of people are ignoring Part P or don't know about it...

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

Agile, read the thread properly! The Algarve thing was a joke in response to Boilerman's joke. And I said quite clearly that I was moving to the house - i.e I'm not living in it yet. Anyway, the plumbers are back and working away. They've had a stern talking to and they know that any more...

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

 Maybe there's a sheep stuck in the pipework? Thanks Happy and everyone else. I feel much better for all the advice you've given me. I'm going to give them one more chance and then find someone else.

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

Happy, my house is actually in South Wales. I'm having it done up and then I'm moving there. When I have a bathroom. In about thirty years.

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

Thanks Happyp. I don't want to hang on to any old pipework, I just want them to do whatever needs to be done to fit the flipping bathroom.

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

Thank you for that tip. You can visit me in the Algarve if you like. Just pop around and sort out my pipework.

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

A Difficult Job For a Plumber?

I’m in the middle of having a bathroom fitted. Old (very very old) bathroom has been taken out. Much of the piping is lead (plumbers knew that was the case). No-one has turned up at all this week. The more experienced plumber of the two involved in the job is supposed to be sorting out...

Tory Government? God help us all

Of course I don't think there are only well off people in Harlem! Maybe you're right and I am thick, but none of what you've quoted seems like solid, well thought out policy to me. It's all so woolly and full of gaps. Even senior Tories have called the Big Society "gimmicky nonsense"...

Tory Government? God help us all

I'd love to be able to pinpoint the unfairness of the Tories' policies as spelt out in their manifesto, but they haven't got any policies. Or at least none that they're prepared to own up to. Which is kind of worrying. Their big election ticket was the Big Society. What does that mean...

Tory Government? God help us all

I'm pretty happy for the Tories to form a government, whether it’s as a minority or in a LibCon coalition. They will **** things up big time, and the electorate will remember why they stopped voting in the likes of Dave and Gideon. If anyone thinks those two Eton twits give a monkey’s toss about...

    Madonna...?

If I filled my radiators with that water, would I get an arse like Madge's? Might be worth it.

Replacing cast iron soil stack incl connection to foul sewer

If I'm having a soil stack replaced (the old is in disrepair) is this notifiable work? It's not being moved or anything, just a straightforward replacement. The plumber hasn't mentioned this, but I thought I'd check. I found a Q&A from the ODPM site, it's a bit unclear but I THINK it's saying...

    Best Baths?

Hi there I'm looking for a decent bath, either a steel bath or an acrilyic shower bath. Budget is quite tight, but I don't want to buy something too cheap and nasty, so I'm thinking around £250. Can anyone recommend good brands for steel baths and showerbaths? Thanks.

    Building regulations and roofs

Cheers kaeford. I looked up the regs and it seems to be all about the level of insulation in the loft, not the thermal qualities of the materials used to re-roof the house, so as you say, it would seem not a particularly difficult or expensive thing to sort out.
