Need advice on a re-roofing job currently underway at my home....

The Lead work is terrible , and I doubt the rest is much better if properly inspected.

    It sounds reasonable to me.

Slate roof gable extension - is this work acceptable (solved).

No it is not acceptable. All of the slates should be riveted, which is possible with doubles. Whoever did the work did not have a clue. The cement fibre undercloak is ok but the muckwork is crap and so is the ridging.

Chimney pot needed and how much...

H and S say that a scaffold should be used. You could save money by organising the scaffold yourself . maybe £300 Then you could buy you pot £50 + 15 for sand and cement and do it yourself. Or if you feel brave do away with the scaffold, kick up tiles and walk up the roof, check your life...

Tiling didnt go to plan. what can i do to rectify

If you do not want to use tile and halfs you can cut tiles in half. If you need to you can cut 20-35mm of the tlie next to the cut. Normally you would have a tile and half in alternate courses

Tile slithers on a Velux install

Redland 49s and similar tiles are usually laid with a straight bond, but can be laid with a staggered bond. Therefore between windows as in above pictures you can move the tiles across half bond and still marry in above and below.

    are these tile battens ok

Yes, in the bottom courses if a tile and half is too small you should have cut about 20mm of the tile before the bonnet and then the cut would be bigger. you would need to do the same in the next 3 or 4 courses.

    are these tile battens ok

You need to be careful with the bond on the cut tiles beside the bonnets. If a tile and half is slightly too small them you may need to cut 30mm of the tile adjacent to the cut into the bonnet to maintain the bond. The thickness of the muck will not be a problem but it is best to bed the...

New extension roof ideas - shallow pitch

Woody If the tiles are suitable for the pitch the weather will not penetrate past the tiles : Hence the battens do not rot. Suitable materials could be EPDM , Felt , Lead or Zinc

New extension roof ideas - shallow pitch

If you carry out the work in the way Woody suggests it may well keep the roof from leaking for a few years, BUT it will not stop the water from getting under the tiles and rotting away the battens the tiles are sitting on until they collapse and you have to strip it and start again. Use a...

Small Entrance Lobby - Pitched roof leaks

I would suggest removing the whole roof and recovering with a breather membrane and then covering with Cement fibre slates, They can be laid down to a 15 degree pitch. I would guess the cost would be around £750-£850. If you want I could come and look and give you a proper quote.

Low pitched dormer into 42degree main roof?

It is not a problem having a different pitch on the dormer. but you may need to use a different tile on the dormer that is compatible with the 20 degree pitch.

    Fibre Cement Slates - shed

You could use the galvenised nails if you want to , but ally nails are better and very cheap to buy. You can not nail through the bottom hole as you would be nailing through the two courses below and the roof would leak everywhere. The copper rivet sits on one course of slate and the 2 in the...

the clips will not work with tiles. Remove the broken tiles, and the new ones will hook over the batten when you put them back of if you want you can bed or stick them to the course below

Roof pitch greater than 45 degrees

All interlocking tiles must be nailed, Plain tiles need to be nailed every 4th course and all perimiters.

Costly fix hasn't worked. Where do I stand?

Can you tell us what the problem was and what was done to fix it . The problem with carrying out expensive repairs can be that the contractor has carried out the work that he feels needed to be done in a correct manner , but he can not be 100 % sure that it will solve all problems , and he...

am I being unreasonable thinking £1500 is too much for this work?

Even if the price is a bit high it is often better to pay that to people you trust rather than trust someone you don't just to save a couple of hundred quid

    leaking valley.

It should not be a difficult job , the problem usually happens because the roofer has not bedded the tiles on to an undercloak. They are often beded straight on the lead and the movement of the lead causes the cement to fall out
