Replacing a concrete floor - advise needed

Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated. My house is late Nineteenth Century and has a central hall and living room off to the right both of which have suspended floors. On the left is a dining room and kitchen with concrete floors, and I need to replace the floor in the dining room...

How to fix a wandering toilet seat?

Thanks Chris, What did plumbers use as a bedding compound before silicon was available? I seem to remember taking off old taps that were bedded down with a hard white substance, but it wasn't so strong that it couldn't be removed if necessary.

How to fix a wandering toilet seat?

Thanks all for the reply, and I'm grateful for your help. Just to clarify, this is a top quality (or at least top price  ) toilet and seat. The hinges are chrome, the studs steel, and the wing nuts brass. The only plastic items are the washers which appear to be of nylon. It seems to...

How to fix a wandering toilet seat?

Thanks kevplumb. But the hinges are chrome plated and came with the (very expensive) Albany seat. They work fine. The problem is the washers move on the ceramic.

How to fix a wandering toilet seat?

I've recently fitted a new toilet (Twyford's Albany). The problem is the seat won't stay put but gradually moves out of alignment. It came with plastic washers and they tend to slip even with the wing nuts tightened as far as I dare. I tried replacing the bottom washers with domed rubber...

Which hot water boiler - electric or LPG?

Thanks everyone for their comments. Couldn't reply earlier because I have been away from my computer. As to my personal hygiene, I always use an electric shower, however I still have to provide for a bath. As was said a washing machine can work from the cold feed, so that's not an issue...

Which hot water boiler - electric or LPG?

Thanks felix, that's one option I am considering. However I hate the idea of airing cupboards. They were necessary before tumbler dryers existed when things came in from the line still damp, but not today. As I live in Cornwall, for part of the year I am trying to keep the house cool, and a heat...

Where can I find the mains supply tap?

This is only an amateur opinion, but it may be possible you don't have a mains stop cock. My last house didn't, and I had to fit one. Try looking at the pavement outside your house. There may be a small iron trap which is the water board's stopcock. It needs a special socket key to turn it...

Which hot water boiler - electric or LPG?

Thanks doitall, I was trying to get away from the idea of heating up a cylinder-full of water most of which I never use, and just cools down during the day. What I would really like is the electric equivalent of an LPG hot water boiler. Is there anything suitable from Heatrae Sadia for...

Which hot water boiler - electric or LPG?

Thanks Kevplumb, but I don't get it. I'm talking about water heating only, and oil would be overkill. I just need something simple - shaving and washing up only.

Which hot water boiler - electric or LPG?

I currently have a very old hot water tank installed on the ground floor which used to run of an Aga - now it just has an immersion heater. I would like to replace it with on-demand water heating. There is suitable location in a utility room adjacent to the kitchen. I don't have mains gas, so it...
