    New radiator not getting hot

Yes, the poor flow to this radiator is definitely affecting its performance and while all other downstairs radiators get vey hot across their whole surface, this one, which I believe is the last in the loop, is only getting hot (not very hot) at the top and the supply pipe is very hot, but the...

    New radiator not getting hot

Yes, the ice plug has definitely fully melted now. I'm currently getting a slow flow of clear water from the TRV when I open it and the pipe and water gets hot. I have another can of freeze spray, so could remove the new valve to see if there's another blockage in the pipe and if so remove it...

    New radiator not getting hot

I've now used the pipe freezing kit to replace the TRV. When I removed the old TRV there was a lot of iron fillings in the top of the pipe so I scooped it it with a screwdriver. This is obviously what is reducing the flow. Having fitted the new TV I opened the valve (radiator still not on) and...

    New radiator not getting hot

Just tried opening the TRV again and nothing but a slow drip. The pipe is also still cold. Maybe this could be an indicator that the valve is not fully opening? Also, maybe the water on the lockshield side became hot because this is residual heat in the return pipe that made it's way back and...

    New radiator not getting hot

Something strange has just happened, which was unexpected, but may be a good indicator!!! Today, I plan to replace both the TRV and the lockshield valve. I have removed the new radiator and decided to do a pressure test, so opened the TRV and directed the water into a bucket, then closed the...

    New radiator not getting hot

I meant to include in my earlier post that I wouldn't have thought my issue was due to unbalanced radiators, since turning the radiators off doesn't seem to make that much difference.

    New radiator not getting hot

The boiler is a Vaillant ecoTEC plus 637 with a built in pump and it was installed 15 years ago. The pump has never been replaced and I'm not sure what model it is as I'm "not allowed" to open up the boiler case as I'm not a heating engineer! The external pump on the circulation side of the LLH...

    New radiator not getting hot

I "briefly" performed these test and the jet from the bleed valve appeared to be around the same pressure regardless of which valve was closed. I would have preferred to have done the tests for longer buy I needed my wife to hold the bucket and catch the water and she didn't have too much time...

    New radiator not getting hot

Thanks for checking the site. Yes, it's definitely a horizontal rad and I did see the installation requirements for vertical radiators, but they don't apply to mine.

    New radiator not getting hot

Thanks for the suggestion. What should I expect and what is doing this showing?

    New radiator not getting hot

I didn't see anything in the instructions suggesting there was a right and a wrong way around. I installed a smaller, slightly different version a couple of years ago without issue and the TRV and lock shield are on the same sides.

    New radiator not getting hot

While redecorating a downstairs room I use for my office, I've taken the opportunity to replace the old single radiator with what is essentially a double (MHS Decoral 97 aluminium radiator, 657mm high x 900mm wide (11 sections)). Fortunately, the pipes from the floor below had lots of movement...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

My existing radiator looks like a T11 (a Stelrad K1). I was hoping to replace it with a double, but I don't believe this would be possible due to the wall to centres distances, without altering the pipes. I did use the bestheating btu calculator and that's the one that gave me the lowest...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

By the way, I used 3 different BTU calculators and all give very different heat requirements for this room: 6088, 5217 and 3788!!! I believe the current radiator is similar to the Stelrad K1 (Type 11), which has an output of 3009, much too low for the room. The one I'm looking is the MHS...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

I did look at the version of the rad that was 80cm shorter, but the BTU rating of that one is much lower, so that would be a big trade off for me. I've decided the BTU is more important than ensuring it will fit as I know I will regret not doing the job properly at a later date. At the moment...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

I tried this last night and was able to make the hole slightly larger to allow movement away from the wall as the pipes appear to run parallel with the wall so there's more give. Unfortunately, this means it is less likely I can move the pipes further from each other. One is restricted by a...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

So, I've now identified a radiator that is "pretty close", although not identical in terms of how it will fit. Original wall to pipe centres was 35mm but there's plenty of movement in the pipe to allow upto 60mm. More concerningare the pipe centres, which were 970mm on the old radiator, but...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

One would hope so, but I'm not so sure ;) The original Saunier Duval combi boiler was replaced around 15 years ago with a Vaillant system boiler and a large unvented cylinder. This system operates very differently to the old one and the Vaillant system does allow a heat curve to be defined and...

    Help understanding radiator measurements

Thanks for the feedback. I have replaced a few radiators around the house over the years so I'm familiar with fitting tails. For the last radiator I replaced, a couple of years ago, I used Loctite 55 thread wrap, which is much thicker than PTFE tape. Initially, I put too much on and couldn't...

Yes, I'm coming to that realisation (again). Thanks :(
