    Toilet cistern - hairline crack?

Opened up the cistern to the downstairs toilet today and noticed in the left hand corner that the glaze appears to have a hairline crack. On the outside there is no damage and the toilet has been in situ for 2.5+ years. Is this a cause for concern if it's only on the inside?

Can someone ID this drain outside the kitchen?

Just had builders around to start taking up the decking to replace with a patio and discovered this. It looks to be blocked but connected to the kitchen drain as whenever the kitchen sink drains, water comes out the top of this. That said, the kitchen waste is connected to a pipe that runs...

    1970s gas pipe in concrete

Hi, Just removed the original fireplace hearth and came across this. Before I get someone in to refill the hole with concrete, I wondered if the pipe needs better protecting? The pipe is really solid which makes me think it might be iron and not copper? Was that standard practice in those days...

    Venting Tumble Dryer

Hi, I currently have what i can only describe as a 'normal' drill with hammer-action, but am having difficulty in drilling the 112mm or so diameter required for fitting a tumble dryer vent. Instead of using a diamond core bit (which probably wouldn't even work with my drill), i have decided...

    Flex or Twin & Earth?

Hi, I am looking to wire up an outside light within the next few months (PIR flood light, 400w). I was hoping to create a spur off the lighting circuit (protected by 5amp fuse) in the loft - once i calculate the amp draw of the light itself - and then run cable outside the house to the light...

    Central Heating Flush

Hello again, I'm looking to flush out my central heating system sometime this week, but was wondering whether it was safe to leave the pilot light on in the boiler? - set to the 'off' position. I flushed the hot water cylinder with the immersion off (fuse removed) and pumps off, but with the...

    Olive Stuck

Hello there, I was recently trying to change a gate valve that keeps letting cold water through, even though it has been shut off (suspect mechanism has corroded after 20 years or so). Now i happen to have a rather annoying problem, whereby on either side of the gate valve, the two olives are...
