US wall lights for use in the UK?

There is a 1mm difference between US and UK ES lamps. I'm prety sure the US are smaller so the lamp may be a bit tight to screw in.

When an electrician changes meter tails...

Legalities aside, what is the difference between a fuse way in an industrial DB in a production environment and a service head? You can’t just turn the board off just because you’re a bit windy that one side is live. I’ve no qualms about either.

Using American 16 AWG wire for UK lighting?

Probably wanted good quality cable, instead of the East European crap.

Help needed to re wire a vintage lamp

It's a double pole switch. If you look close you will see the contact quadrant that bridge the fixed contacts.

    Pulling Main Fuse E-Petition

As most of you aren’t electricians I suppose it was a bit pointless to ask your backing for something to make the industry safer. The idea of isolators built in to smart meters is dead and buried, lost out to £sd. But some of you still cling to the misconception they will be fitted.

    Fatally Flawed - an E-Petition

The problem is that this is a chicken and egg issue, frankly I thing it ludicrous to query the petition on the basis that there is no relevant standard, the reason for there being no standard is that there is no regulation! Regulation needs to be put in place and the only way is via legislation.

    Pics from the Workshop

You can’t beat a lanyard for closing if you have the slightest doubt or use any form of remote closing. Unfortunately you have to rack the OCB in to the service position first, no escaping being close then.

What make is the OCB? Looks in good nick, what was it in for? Or is that after you’ve done with it.

    Removing redundant 2nd CU

It’s annoying to find a thread that’s been posted on another board. If you don’t like the answers given on one board it’s up to you. Don’t try to play one against the other. Employ an electrician that will give a definitive answer!

how to set up a motor overload

Thermal O/L’s are set at 100% of FLC, dashpot at 115%. For a star/delta starters the setting is .57 of the FLC (be careful, some manufacturers will have applied the correction factor)

    Scary stuff..

Will see what I can do. It was a high speed HRC for protecting thyristors and diodes in a 1850KW drive. There's 24 1000A fuses in the beast

    fuse wire

On a smilar vein. As a quick fix an electrician at the plant I worked at, replaced a blown 100A HRC fuse with a single strand of .064" copper. The entire 1000KVA switch board was desroyed

    Electrical Problem

One of the cable is line neuteral and hopefuly the earth, the other is the switch cable. Conect the two reds together but not to the light fitting. Conect the blacks one to the blue and the other to the brown. The lack of a second earth means the switch box is unearthed, not ideal, but not...

    Scary stuff..

It's a sad endorsement of British industry. Accountants now rule the roost rather than engineers. It's crap, but what the hell, it's cheap :( I was lucky to survive a 1000 Amp fuse failing, I've never seen the ceramic casing split on a fuse before. The accounts department of the company I...
