    Ceiling and external wall insulation.

I recently had an EPC check and afterwards read some highly critical reports on them but for all that the report did recommend an extra 300mm of loft insulation which means I will have to tidy the loft up to install. Can anyone recommend where its possible to obtain the least expensive material...

EPC report is not at all good so I'm looking for advice.

Although I put 300mm wool type insulation in the loft twenty years ago I then covered it with chip board so I could store stuff. The EPC report suggest 275 mm more insulation but I'm not inclined to clear the loft and remove the chipboard so I wondered if there is something like foam insulation...

    Refurbishing cavity insulation?

I live in a between the wars detached bungalow and when I had to replace a damaged brick discovered that the flock insulation only came half way up the cavity whether this was a natural shaking down over the years or simple incompetence dishonesty of the installers I have no idea but it poses...

    Uncomfortable toilet pan height.

I'm a male in my mid 80s and finding it uncomfortable in lowering myself onto the toilet. I'm aware of the "extensions" one can fit to the top of the pan but I suspect that they are unhygienic. The existing toilet pan height is 15 inches. Are there varying toilet pan heights?

    House external insulation rendering.

Our bungalow has a flock in the cavity insulation and on checking I found that it had sunk to less than 50% height and I doubt that the local authority would offer any assistance in putting it right. However, Some time ago I saw that external insulation rendering being applied to some housing...

How to check if a stainless steel Wall Starter kit is in place?

I'm interested in buying a property with a new extension that has not been tied into the old part of the building by toothing into the existing older building. Does anything like a mobile x-ray kit exist to check if a wall starter kit was used?

    Insulation questions.

I had to cut into the cavity wall of our bungalow some time ago and found a very loose packing of flock which suggests that the insulation is not that effective so is it possible to actually measure how effective a buildings insulation is and if so what sort of organisation does it? I'm sure...

    An old fashioned concrete block.

I lived in a bungalow years ago built between the wars out of secondhand timber from Milton Camp. Eventually it was covered with concrete block walls. These blocks were 6” thick X 9” X 18” were extremely dense and had what I would describe as a, “Knobbly finish” which I suppose was meant...

    Underpinning on a gravel base.

A trench has been dug round a brick built building showing settlement cracks and I noted that the concrete foundations are laying on top of a band of natural gravel. I last worked on such a problem in the 1950s when serving my time as a Bricklayer and we undercut the foundations, laid concrete...

Light weight windows for a metal shed?

I have just erected a metal shed or rather my grandson did it for me and I'm rather worried regarding it over heating as I'm using it as a Hen house. One way to control the temperature would be to install a window either side of it but as a result of the frail nature of the structure it can only...
