    Bath edge not straight

Hi, fitting a Milan L Shaped bath and have spotted the top surface the hinged shower screen sits on isn't very flat, it has a curve in it with 6mm gap at wall and and about 3mm at L point. I've attached pictures. I personally think this is too much of a curve to fit, what's others opinions? Thanks

    Flashing Soakers with Profiled Tiles

Hi, just finishing off my roof on an extension. I've fitted cavity trays with short lead as my BC guy said he wanted soakers on the tiles. The only thing is that I'm using profiled tiles (Redland Renown), which apparently shouldn't have soakers, just stepped flashing. Is it still fine to use...

    Rafter Tolerance

Hi, I'm just finishing building a cut roof. I wondered what the allowable deviation is between rafter heights. They're all basically level, but I've cut my last one and its about 2mm below adjacent ones. Is this acceptable, and what is the acceptable deviation? Any answers much appreciated as...

    Rafter to Ridge Beam connection

Hi, just about to start putting my cut roof on a single story extension. I'm having a vaulted/cathedral roof, with a glulam beam as the ridge beam taking the load. I'm cutting the rafters (5" x 2") so about 2" sits on top of the beam and 3" butts up against it. Not sure best practice for...

    UPVC WINDOW SMALLEST FRAME PROFILE

Which UPVC manufacturer makes the smallest frame profile to give the maximum glazed area, or are they all basically the same - i.e roughly 100mm from frame edge to edge of glazing (casement window fully opening).

Narrow frame for max glass width

Hi all, I have to replace a small window in a cupboard I'm turning into toilet. The window measures 280w x 780h and the building inspector wants a fully opening window. My problem is that with a fully opening window the plastic is going to be about 90mm either side only leaving about 100mm...

    Vaillant Ecomax 828 Noise?????

Hi, I have a Ecomax 828/2e installed that has started making a whining noise when the HW is running. The noise sounds a bit like whining and slight fan rattle, but is coming from the top area of the combustion chamber so pretty sure not fan. If you turn the water temp down the the noise reduces...

Glow Worm Ultracom 30cxi - Continuous Noise

Hi I have a Glow Worm Ultracom 30 cxi that has started making a noise when running, for hot water and heating. The noise is like a ticking scraping noise similar to a fan making contact with something. I don't think it's the fan as it's definately coming from the water pump area, but I didn't...

Dormer Lead Valley Pointing - Should it be?

Hi, I've just had a dormer put on the side of my 1930's semi. The ridge of the dormer is about 12" below the ridge of the original roof, the the new dormer roof slope is below the hipps (right term I think) of the original. There is a lead valley from the dormer roof to the hipp ridge tiles...

    Mould Under Tile Surface

Hi, I have recently fitted a Boston tile that has the fake grout lines. I've noticed that mold seems to have penetrated the fake grout lines in places, which I rather shocked about as I assumed it should be glazed to stop this. Has anyone else come across this problem. Cheers Pixxyco

    What Boiler?

Hi, second post on this topic.I have a Chafatoux et Maury Celtic Plus that has stopped producing hot water, which I think may be the flow valve. At a guess I expect it would cost near £200 to repair, and as it is old and makes some nasty noises I was thinking it was more sensible to replace it...

    Type of Bath advice

Hi, I'm putting a new bathroom in and am undecided on what type of bath, acrylic or metal. I like the look of the Ideal Standard Acrylic Jasper Morrison double ended bath. Does anyone have any views on the quality of this bath (we will be using it as a shower bath), or is it better to get a...

    Roof Felt Ripping Easily

Hi, I'm just laying some green felt on a shed roof (better quality than shed felt), but without any underlay. The stuff I have seems to rip and crack extremely easily, is this because it's crap stuff, or just me. Cheers

    Loft Conversion Means of Escape

Hi, I'm just checking on the minimum distance that a roof window has to be from the edge of the roof. Can anyone confirm as to whether the 1.7m maximum distance is still a requirement or not as I get the inpression that this was removed from the building reg revision in 2007? Cheers

    100mm Joist Hanger Packing

Hi, I'm just fitting a doubled up 2" joist into a 100mm hanger. There is about a 10mm gap between side of joist and side edge of hanger, is it OK to just pack this out with a 10mm bit of wood? Cheers

    Joist Hanger Fitting

Hi, fitting long leg joist hangers to a 8x2 doubled up joist. Do I notch the joist so the hanger wrap over sits flush with the top? I've read you do, but I've also read that your shouldn't notch double joists - you either know or you don't! Cheers for any help.

Rafter strengthening for Velux roof window

Hi, I'm going to install a couple of velux windows (1400 x 780) in my loft. I know I need to strengthen the rafters either side. Ideally a one piece rafter double needs to run the complete length of the original rafter, but due to the purlins being in the way this is going to be awkward. Is it...

    Old Meter and Fuses

Hi, I have an old electricity meter with 3 huge fuses on a board next to it that takes up more space than the meter itself. 2 wires exit from the meter to black boxes the size of fag packets before a wire exits from each to the consumer unit. I have a guy coming from the elec company to...
