    110 branch?

Thanks for the replies. As it stands there is an existing toilet in a room and they are adding a cloakroom in the next room. I have run the soil pipe from the new toilet position to the back of the existing toilet (approx 2m between them) I have raised the new toilet by approx 50mm (1:40). I...

    110 branch?

Is it possible/allowed to fit a 110 branch immediately behind an existing loo, to connect in another loo? There is an existing toilet and they want to fit a toilet in the next room (about 2m between the current loo and the proposed new loo). There is no access to the stack as it has all been...

Part P 17th, Smoke Alarms, Existing Circuits

Replace your current "damaged" light fitting with one of these and be done with it... http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Fire_and_Smoke/Housesafe/index.html I have just noticed that TLC has discontinued them but other places should sell them.

    unvented cylinder and economy 7

AFAIK a supplier will change your meter for free if you go onto (or off) E7. E7 is not any cheaper unless you use 40% or more of your total power off peak. So as Steve said, are the night storage heaters in the property?

    32A mcbs protecting ring main

"In conduit in an insulated wall" is not the worst case scenario, try the same with "in insulation not touching plasterboard". The TLC calculator is for radial circuits, just because you have said there are 2 cables together (in the drop down menu) does not make it a ring circuit. That is for...

Ryobi Petrol Hedgecutters - any good?

It looks ok but it would be worth trying to find out who makes it for them to see if spare parts are readily available. Some of the cheaper makes (Ryobi included, I am told) sell their units cheaply but make their money on spares. So cheap to buy but expensive to run.

    Fitting Automatic Light Switches

I have used them on a few jobs, mostly for communal areas (stairs, landings etc) and the first ones I used were rubbish and very temperamental, changed them for some very expensive German made sensors and they were brilliant. One customer tried to get me to fit them to their kids bedrooms but...

help identify load/ring in a fused isolation switch

Sounds like you have cracked it. If you want to be able to reach the FCU to try the other ways suggested then you can connect a piece of cable between one of the probes on the meter and connect the other end of the cable to the cable you are trying to reach (make sure you disconnect it before...

Is 3 live and 1 neutral return allowed

The last time I checked one of those adaptors used about 3w in standby mode, which is about £1.80 a year (depending on your tariff).

    wiring for bathroom light switch

Ideally you would have a tester and you would be able to see which cable is the actual live. Connect it up either way and it will work - single red to COM and pair of reds to L1 or pair of reds to COM and single red to L1. PS if the light swicth operates upside down (switch down turns lights...

GU10 ceiling lamps burning roof timber

These LEDs were recommended by somebody else on the forum http://www.litebulbs.co.uk/product/22591/exergi-hyperbright-led-gu10-4w-50000h-warm-white.aspx I quite like CFL lamps similar to http://www.aurora.eu.com/ProductPages/LampProductDetails.aspx?g=6225&c=79&b=51&oc=79 Not manyl LED...

GU10 ceiling lamps burning roof timber

You can replace them with alternatives. LED is much cooler but the ones that will give you a similar light output to halogens are not cheap. You could use CFL lamps but they sometimes need special fittings or else they stick out the front of the fitting.

    electrical laws

Notice I have not bothered to respond to a certain somebody trying to say that it is ok for a person, doing DIY electrical work in their bathroom, to do so without using an RCD to protect the circuit. We all know that there is more than 1 way to skin a cat but as far as I am concerned the person...

    bathroom RCD requirements

Well done BAS  New circuits will require RCD protection as I said in my first post. You normally protect the whole circuit (in the CU) that feeds the lights and fan in the bathroom, which may include SELV gear, basically you are protecting the circuit up to the SELV gear.

    Maintenance free vs accessible

Time is money. If you spend 15 minutes doing a fancy crimp, heat shrink, chocbox connection (which is no good if have more than 2 cables to join), plus lugging crimping tools, heat guns, extension lead to plug in the heat gun and 3 different materials to remember vs fitting a box. If you are...

    Cable Drop

Cable tray or basket is widely used in commercial situations but not really in domestic. There is nothing wrong with using them in a domestic property, they make a nice neat job. I would earth the cable trays though.

Can I do my own outdoor lights but get a leccy to finish?

As Spike says it is doable but you will need a spark to tell you what size/type of cables to use and where to run them etc.
