How to fit a black slate fireplace hearth?

Hi- I'm fitting a three piece black slate hearth to an existing domestic 1960's 14in hearth fireplace (old tile fireplace/ hearth removed). There is a solid concrete bed under the old tile hearth. It will be an open fire burning solid fuel. Could anyone please confirm the following/ help with...

Is there a tool to remove a stubborn 7/16 MALE sump plug?

Hi- not quite a car I know, but a ride on lawnmower with a 7/16 inch MALE sump plug. I've tried spanners, mole grips, adjustables, but it's starting to round the plug's edges. Anyone know if there's a square socket to fit?Halfords don't do. Thanks in (hopeful) anticipation. Richard.

Is there a reducer from 1 inch to .5 inch?

Hi- just tying to fit a new flexible shower pipe to a 1960's set of bath taps. (Gulp). Male fitment seems to measure about 1 inch/ 25mm, and all modern flexi-hoses are now, I believe, 15mm/ .5 inch. Is there such a converter, otherwise replacing the taps will be major due to almost impossible...

Can I do self levelling in two stages without join issues?

Hi- subject says it really. Is the ideal to do a whole room in SLC in one go, and if I can't, can I simply pour up to the hardened edge the next day without e.g. expansion crack issues developing later. (SLC is on concrete/ cement to be tiled over). Also, can you put SLC on top of...

Is there an alternative to self-levelling compound?

Just checked builders' screeded floor against highest point of floor on other side of room, and it's lower by 20 to 32mm , over about 18sq m. I plan to tile floor. New to all this, but on a budget, it looks to me that I'd need to pay a fortune on SLC to put this right. New screed is bone dry...

How do I get floor level over 7m?

That's 7 metres, not miles....by about 3 metres. Uneven kitchen floor, slopes a bit one side, pitted in places where quarry tiles gouged out, dips a bit where new screed is. I've read post about grinding high spots, filling gouges with 400 mortar and running around with a spirit level, but over...

Tiling a floor-Do I need decoupling? Primer? Self levelling?

Hi- I have a kitchen floor to tile- 25sq. m. Two areas are newly screeded on jabfloor insulation where rotten old wooden floor was, and two areas original cement where quarry tiles were. Now for the questions.... 1/. The new screed is solid, but powdery on top with some loose sharp sand...

Just short of Jabfloor 70 100mm- can I finish with Celotex?

Yes I'm penny pinching, I know! Thing is I'm about 1m2 short of 100mm Jabfloor 70 before screeding, and have leftover 100mm Foil backed Celotex foam which I'll otherwise chuck. Any problem mixing them?

Which conduit for mains cable in a concrete slab?

Hi- I'm burying a through-run of about 2m of a rings main in a concrete slab before Jabfloor insulating the floor and screeding over. (Basically I think it will be easier than chanelling out the underside of the Jabfloor for it, on top of concrete slab). Is something like plastic flexible...

How do I conduit/ lag plastic pipes buried in concrete?

Hi- I'm burying 15mm barrier mains water pipe, and CH barrier in a kitchen concrete slab before Jabfloor insulating it. (Basically I think it will be easier than chanelling out the underside of the Jabfloor for the pipes). Is something like JG 15mm conduit OK for this? Or is 22mm easier/...

Insulating upstands- what to do if in middle of room?

Hi- Putting in new insulated concrete floor. Upstands to prevent thermal bridging usually hide under skirting, but can anyone tell me what to do if the new floor is the middle third of a room (like the filling in a sandwich) between two already concrete areas? Can I screed over top of the...

Is concrete mixed by volume or weight, or not too important?

Doing a mix of 4:2:1 concrete (20mm gravel, grit sand, cement). Worked out weight I need of each from general calculators. When mixing, I guess the cement is the heaviest, so should I mix roughly by weight or will by volume be near enough for a C20 domestic floor slab? Thanks.

Is ST4/ C20 the way to go for domestic concrete slab?

Hi- putting 6m2 100mm concrete slab over foundations/ DPM before Jabfloor & screed. I believe ST4/ C20 is the way to go. Can anyone verify? Thanks.

Are JG Speedfit plastic 15mm stop valves suitable for mains?

Just fitted two of these(two mains coming into house), pipe sliced copper (so no burrs) each side, marked depth of insertion carefully on pipes (about 3cm), in a straight line, so no pull to the sides, and both are leaking on one side. It doesn't say not suitable for mains on the pack, but says...

Hi- 1930's lead pipe with brass stopcock inside house- shut it to do work, opened it and left with horizontal handle in my hand- sheared off vertical rod. Any (polite) suggestions?! If turned off at road, could internal mechanism in the stopcock be screwed out and replaced with new handle...
