    Basic home network advice please

Is it possible to get some advice on this please: I have a Virgin Media hub in an airing cupboard upstairs. In a recent renovation, I ran single Cat 6 cables from the airing cupboard to three locations (Main bedroom, Kitchen and Lounge). My plan was to plug in all 3 Ethernet cables into the...

    Fire hazard in Storage Heater

We have recently bought a flat with E7 heating and I thought that I would just whip the covers off the heaters to clean all the crap out before having to put them on. Found this inside one of them - (transit packaging?). Must have been slowly cooking inside for about 20 years! :eek...

Sliding door runner identification & replacement

Hi, the sliding balcony door in our new flat will only shut if the door is lifted very slightly whilst turning the handle to engage the closing action. It looks like one of the rollers / closers has dropped and the bottom of the door catches on it as the door moves into the frame to close. I...

    New ensuite vent options

I live on the 5th floor of a block of flats and want to fit an ensuite to the main bedroom. I do have an outside wall but drilling to the outside will be really difficult because of the height and getting permission from the block management / scaffolding etc. The bathroom in the flat below...

Slightly different 'oven not working' problem

Oven is a John Lewis JLDUOS705 and the top oven works fine but the bottom oven is completely unresponsive - no heat / light or fan. The clock/timer appears to be working correctly but after much probing with a multimeter is still my prime suspect. The suspect timer is here: IMG_1526 2 by...

Chimney removed to below roof - does it still need venting?

Hi, the house we are buying has already had the central chimney lowered below the roof tiles and the top of it is now in the loft. Inside the house there are vent grills cut in plywood used to cover up the fire places. I am going to make a better job of sealing up the fireplaces with either...

Hi, can someone help with this please. Last winter part of the front face of the bathroom window lintel fell off. Looks like the metal window bars have rusted and popped part of the face off. Portable generator produces 240v but not 110v

Hi, my generator runs and produces 240v but when I switch it over to 110v I only get about 5v. Is there something obvious, to those in the know, that I should check please? It's a Gardener Marshall Type SIT 210BS 3KVA. I got it second hand as spares or repair so I am delighted that it runs at...

Hi, I have just bought a 15m drain and tube cleaning hose for my Nilfisk Pressure Washer. When I connect the new hose, the pressure washer runs for about 5 seconds and then cuts out. I have to release the trigger and wait for about 10 seconds before it will start again. 5 seconds later it...

Gloworm CXI30 hot tap heating c/h pipe

When I turn on my hot tap I notice that in addition to hot water at the tap the furthest left hand pipe on the boiler (c/h flow) also gets hot. Hotter than the tap pipe. This sometimes actually heats the flat up when the thermostat is not calling for heat. Anybody got any ideas please?

Shower outlet bottoms out 45 degrees short

I am trying to correct some fairly poor work and the picture below shows an issue with the shower outlet. I screw it all the way in and it bottoms out just 45 degrees before the correct 'outlet downwards' position. If I unscrew it 3/4 of a turn then it feels very loose. What is the best way...

    Smaller swept T fitting needed?

The main stack is to the right and the pipe emerging from the left has a slight fall towards the stack. The problem is the lower bath waste which has a fairly significant rise towards the stack meaning water from the kitchen ends up around the bath trap resulting in leaks. If I could raise the...
