    Decking...what now?

Hi. We have just pressure washed our wooden decking. Not sure of age but smooth rather than ridged. Pale wood, feels warm to bare feet. It's come up well but we're hesitating over putting any products on it. Does it have to be stained/waxed/varnished? If so, what sort of product/application...

    Garden gates

Can you help me with my discombobulation over options? I have some metal gates across my drive which need tlc. They have been painted before with some kind of matt grey coating. The verticals are fine; the horizontals need a wire brush and a bit of emery cloth. Because I want a particular...

Help me make my metal gates great again?

I have some attractive metal gates, with golf ball size spheres along the tops and narrow spaces between the uprights. The paint is flaking and I would ideally like to make them smooth and glossy. So, preparation being key, I wonder if you experts can tell me whether I should use sanding...

    Brace yourselves!

Hi When I moved house recently the removal men disassembled a wardrobe before it went into storage. They offered to reassemble it but given what happened with their other assembly jobs, I decided to do it myself as I knew what went where. I have now (days and days and days later) managed to...

    Magnetite?

Hi. I have a 1960s house with a combi boiler fitted in 2009. Heating working well except for one rad which won't heat adequately. Patchy heat - along the top, some at one side. No air coming out when I bleed it. Am thinking sludge. I thought I'd loosen the hex blank at the other end to see what...

    Noisy towel rail

Could some kind soul advise? We have just moved house. There is a combi boiler and a plumbed-in towel rail. When the heating comes on the rail makes a long grinding sound. Similar to when the float in a header tank gets jammed. Anyone know why and whether there's a diy cure? TIA

    Warm air heating system

I have bought a house with a warm air heating system (probably installed when the house was built 25/30 years ago). As I have allergies which are exacerbated by it, I'd like to replace it with a central heating system that would also heat the water. Conflicting info about the cost of such...

Loose front doorstep and pointing patio - basic questions

I have a loose concrete flag which is my doorstep. I need to fix it back. What should I use (difference between concrete, mortar and cement?) and is there a particular technique? eg Several good dobbets or a smooth layer round the edges? Secondly, I want to improve the look of my patio which...

    Damp on exterior rendered bay

We have a rendered bay window on the first floor with lead flashing top and bottom. Penetrating damp is causing flaking and mould. The damp appears to be coming up from the flashing below, rather than entering on the face or dripping down. We are having to decorate each year. Others along our...

    Polycarb roof

Hello I have a polycarb conservatory roof which leaks. I had my chap put silicone along the spars externally but there are still a couple of leaks. I believe there is 'gasket tape' that can be used to seal the joins. Could anyone recommend a brand or comment on the process generally. I thought...

    Scratches on plastic bodywork

Had a prang a couple of weeks ago which caused lots of fairly deep scratches on my wing, which is plastic, and my door, which isn't. Followed instructions about sanding round them with coarser and then finer grit wet and dry paper with washing liquid and water. Got rid of scratches...

    Cracked plastic repair

Hi After a contretemps with a lorry last week, I came away with two hairline cracks along my wheel arch. This is a 2004 citroen and the wings are plastic. I'd like to make neat cosmetic repair but not sure how to fix the cracks. Wonder if there's a strong tape I could put behind it or some...

    powerflush, new trvs or magnaclean?

Hi I have radiators that won't heat up when all switched on. Individually they all work fine, but once all on, they're all cold. Pipework is microbore which is green with verdigris and so are the valves. Boiler and pump work fine. Tank is a combined system on the first floor (one of the things...
