    Shaping edge of MDf

I have a peice of MDF; 1000 x 1000, and 18mm deep. I want to take the edge off on all 4 sides (as per the pic). If I use a sander I'm not sure it will be perfect finish, Or will it? Do I need to router it off, or do it some other way? Thanks in advance.

    Light bulb blew up

I switched on the ceiling light this morning, there was a loud bang and this happened. The remainder of the bulb is still in the fitting. Any idea why this happened, do I need an electrician or can I just replace the bulb and carry on? Thank you in advance.

    Fixing mdf

I'm building a freestanding bookshelf out of mdf (for cheapness). I need to fix the shelves by putting a screw through the side of the bookshelf (mdf), and then into the edge of the shelf (mdf). I'm just a little concerned that when the shelves are loaded with books, the self might not...

    Damaged lawn

We currently live in a rented house, we are due to move out in 4 weeks time. The kids pool has killed the grass in a small area as you can see, I was going to replace with new turf. Is there a better, quicker, cheaper way of dealing with this problem, bearing in mind it needs to be fixed...

    Used van

I'm about to buy a used van, thanks for the guidance on here it's going to be a Transit. I've seen a few on line and have spoken with the dealers, the good value vans are ex-lease, for example purchased by the dealer from 'Burnt Tree' or 'Enterprise', is it a bad idea to by an ex-rental...

    Plug lifter

In order to lift the plug in our bath, you have to turn this big chrome knob to the left. Our chrome knob has come away from the bath slightly, our twin boys (aged 2) like to put their fingers in the gap, but then cry when their fingers get nipped. How do I tighten this? There's a hole...

    Which van?

I'm going to buy a new panel van, I've got about £8,500 to spend. I want something with reasonably low mileage and 2 or 3 years old which means my choices are the Vivaro, Transit, Traffic, Primaster etc. I'd like to go with VW and Merc, but would mean getting an older one, with higher...

    Pergola beams

I want to run some pergola beams, connected to the house at one end and spanning over my deck, each 47 x 150. The span is 4.0 metres. Will this be okay, they will not bear any weight, but I was worried they may twist and buckle over time. Any help appreciated.

    Sticking gates

I fitted these gates and posts just before Christmas and I was very pleased with myself. Thing is, now they won't open. You can't really see from the picture too well but the coss beam has warped (upwards) slightly, and I'm thinking it has pulled the two posts closer together, and...

    New top soil for lawn

I'm getting our back garden ready to turf; I've removed our old turf and got rid of it. Some areas were low so I've had some screened top soil delivered and raised the low areas with the new top soil. I've levelled the garden now, but you can clearly see the areas where ive added the new...

    Preparing for new lawn

I've renovated the back garden and will lay new turf soon. I've been walking across it quite a bit as I've had to sort out the borders. Should I go over it again but set the rotivator on a high setting so it just churns up a thin top layer? Thanks.

    Rotavating

I tried to rotavate my garden today, although the ground was reasonably soft the rotivator just wouldn't dig in, it just sort of scratched the surface. I got my fork and turned the earth over, so it looks like a ploughed field, now the rotivator gets through it. Is this the only way to do...

    Preparing for a new lawn

I've removed the turf in our back garden today, I will rotavate next, level, then lay turf. Thing is, we have an old, large border which has quite a few weeds in it. Do I have to pull all the weeds up, or can I just rotavate them into the earth? Many thanks.

    Light clay soil

I am going to rotivate our bare earth tomorrow ready for turf. It is light clay. Should I rotivate mushroom compost into soil, add 50mmm of top soil level and then lay turf? Many thanks.

    New lawn

Hi, I've read all the necessary posts about laying a new lawn and know what I've got to do. My mate is hiring a rotivator and will lend it to me this weekend, so I can rotivate our garden, which is just earth left by the builders. I want to do all the prep this weekend and leave it...

    iPad or normal laptop?

I am self employed (one man band) I have a laptop and use it for e-mails, surfing the net and mostly use MS Word for most of my business needs; invoices etc. My laptop is on it's last legs and I need to upgrade. I don't know much about IPads, do you think one would be suitable for my needs...

    Laptop turning itself off

Recently I have been working away on my laptop then without warning it suddenly turns itself off. Like someone has cut the power to it. I try to turn it back on but it's dead. Leave it for an hour and it powers up again but the same thing happens shortly after. It feels hot underneath so I...

    Exterior wood filler

I've heard the best filler for exterior timber is homemade; something like saw dust with linseed oil and glue - I think  Does anyone know the proper mix, or is it best to just buy it from the shop? Many thanks.
