How can I clean my pool during the hosepipe ban - help!

Hi, I have a 3m diameter x 1m deep surface pool, which we put up each summer and take down again at the end of the season. Due to excessive dry weather here in Hampshire, we have a Temporary Usage Ban coming into effect this week which, amongst other things, bans the use of the mains water...

Old, heavy, 1-pipe system rads - worth something to someone?

I'm just in the process of taking out our one-pipe system rads and replacing the central heating with shiny new two-pipe rads. So the old stuff - big, heavy single rads. Old looking valves. Is it worth trying to sell them on for "restoration" ... or just get them weighed in at a scrap yard...

Radiator tails - how do I stop them weeping!?

I think I've got the right words here - the little spiggot type thing that connects a radiator to its valve. Is that the "tail"? Anyway, couple of new rads - bog standard. A set of TRVs + lockshields for each rad. PTFE tape on the threads. Adjustable spanner (12") to tighten up these...

    Vaillant turboMAX F23 - confused!

Heating has stopped working. BG engineer visits and diagnoses the problem as being a blockage in the radiator network somewhere. We have an old property with an old one-pipe system, so although BG cover the boiler, they don't cover the rads. What confuses me is this:- when I run the kitchen...

Fence post has rotted and broken

Our fence been victimised by the recent winds :o So now I need to work out how to repair this? Looks like the fence post had started to rot anyway, and it was concreted in to the ground. What's the approach here? Do I drill out the remaining stub and slip a new post in there? Or is...

Boiler is highest point - qhat if air gets in it?

I'm going to fit some extra pipe work to our CH supply/return from the boiler. I'll be adding these to the vertical run from the skirting board area (where the current pipe work runs around) to the boiler. I.e. the vertical pipes that run up the wall to the boiler. This is a bungalow and the...

Drain central heating when no drain valve?

We have a one pipe central heating system, and I want to insert a compression equal tee into the supply pipe (and another into the return pipe) to add in some new two-pipe runs. So I will need to drain down the system. Trouble is, I cannot find any evidence of a drain valve! This is a...

What options for replacing a leaky 3/4" galv stopcock?

I have an imperial 3/4" galvansised steel rising main that is connected to a stopcock. This is all very old and every since we moved in (last year) the stop cock has dripped very slowly. The BG plumber has had a go at tightening it when they've been around to get the boiler on to homecare, but...

my mains water seems to be 27mm pipe?

I have a very old (and leaky) stop cock. I've measured the pipe either side and it's 27mm. I can find replacement parts for 28mm pipe, but I'm not sure about my pipe. It doesn't even seem to be an imperial size (27mm is just over an inch, but is less than 1 1/8th inches).

Rising main goes from 22mm to 15mm before the combi boiler

Hello! Just been playing about in the loft and noticed this: Our rising main comes in at 22mm but goes down to 15mm halfway through the loft. It's a direct system. There are some junctions on the main in the loft before it steps down the diameter. One is a 22mm feed to a disused (but not...

Fitting an M12 coachbolt - do I drill 12mm hole?

Hi, just about to use some coach bolts to join some timbers. I'm going to use M12 bolts - do I drill 12mm diameter holes for this? Or actually, will I need to drill 13mm diameter? I don't want to drill too big such that the head + nut starts sinking in. But also I don't want to drill too...

How do I manoeuvre joists up to existing rafters?

I have a garage that has rafters but no joists. It's been like that forever (well, since before we moved in, anyway). The roof has asbestos tiles covering all of it. I want to add joists to stop roof spread and to provide some storage space - see the picture: it's the red and green that are...

Fitting joists to detached garage - do Building Regs apply?

We have recently bought a property with a detached garage. Although it has a pitched roof, there are no joists (only rafters). I'm going to fit the joists and then board over them for some loft-type storage space of boxes etc. A friend mentioned that because of the distance of the garage from...

Electric hob fitting: heat-resistance on cut worktop?

Just about to install a bosch electric hob, and the instructions say "seal cut surfaces to make them heat-resistant". This is in relation to a square being cut out of the middle of the worktop. What can I use to seal the exposed chipboard of the worktop? Is there some sort of paint type...

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

I am just in the process of installing a new Bosch HBN13B251B Avantixx Built Under Double Electric Oven in our kitchen. The electricians added in a cooker switch fed by 10mm^2 from the consumer unit when the house was rewired a few months ago. We have just got around to buying an oven, so...

I found a water tank in the loft (with water)

Recently moved in to a bungalow that was built in the 30's and has very little done to it in that time. Last night I was having a rummage around the loft and I discovered that the old water tank that I could see from the hatch does indeed have a lot of water in it. I pushed the ball cock...

Tap surround leaking on water butt - how to seal?

I've noticed that the tap leaks on a second hand water butt that I've just connected. The tap valve itself is ok (you can turn it on and off) - it's the seal around the tap that is leaking. It's a plastic water butt with plastic tap. I'm thinking of using a seal or something, but I'm not...

Re-wire required - DIY after going on a course?

I'm just about to become the new owner of an old property that needs rewiring. I'm thinking it will cost around £2500 to pay someone to do this (it's a 3 bed bungalow). So that got me thinking about doing the "part p" course (can't remember it's proper C&G number right now!) and then doing...
