Should I return this mitre saw?

I've just bought a Metabo KGS 305M, a 12" compound sliding mitre saw. It's a beast of a machine, but will handle sleepers with ease, which is one significant reason for purchase. I've adjusted the fence; no problem. But the vertical is off by about 1.5-2º. Since it's a compound saw I can make...

Glue for PVC false glazing bars/muntins

Hi Folks I have some PVC glazing units with "false muntins"; i.e. PVC stick-on bars. On the sunny side of the house, the bars are dropping off (units are 15 years old). I assume that the PVC was originally self-adhesive. I have managed to clean the glue reside off the windows. The PVC backing...

    Another ... retaining wall

Hi. Looking for some advice please. Some of my boundary fence posts have rotted and need replacing. The issue is that there’s a difference in height of about 50-60cm between my ground and my neighbour’s ground. The original “retaining wall” from when the house was built (in 2004) consisted of a...

3 core and earth colour coding

Hi I'm replacing the wiring to my attic light switch with 3 core and earth so that I can use a neon switch; which of course requires a neutral. Obviously this isn't the conventional use of this cable, and I wanted to check the coding for the neutral wire. From the information I can find, grey...

    Cooker location - regulations?

Hi folks My aunt is looking to get new cupboards and work surfaces fitted in her kitchen. Although she has no desire to change or move her cooker, as I understand things she has been told that the cooker must be moved because of current legislation regarding proximity to a doorway. The...

FCU height covered by accessibility regs?

Can someone confirm that a switched FCU doesn't count as a "switch" for the puposes of the sockect/switch height accessibility building regs? I can't find anything that specifically mentions FCUs. The appliance (additional lighting in an integral garage) will be controlled by a separate switch...

    Chipped brick repair

In drilling a hole through to the outside wall, I've managed to break off a piece of the face of the brick - full height and about 6-7 cms across. It's a very clean break, but the piece is fairly fragile (about 10-12 mm thick at most). I want to cement it back in place, but anything...

Just checking ... immersion heater spur?

Happy and Safe New Year all. I have just installed two security lights (150W each) that I have not yet connected, with cable runs into the loft. There are currently 11 light fittings and 2 extractor fans on the upstairs lighting curcuit, so if I connect the security lights to the upstairs...

    Two-way switches ... break-before-make ?

Are domestic 2-way (light) switches break-before-make? If so is it acceptable to reply upon this as a method of "disconnecting" from one terminal before connecting to the other? I'd ideally like to use one to switch the live feed to a PIR to the live feed to the light which the PIR controls...

To tee or not to tee ... bend radius

Is the bend radius on a "normal" 20mm conduit tee too tight to take two 2.5 T&E cables along each arm? The radius needs to be 31mm, but it looks very tight in the picture I have ... I'll know when they turn up on my doorstep .... but I'm sure someone here can tell me before then.

    Alarm interference

Hi I want to extend the ring main within my (integral) garage. The best route is to run conduit just below ceiling height. However, half-way along my "wall of choice" there's a pattress at the end of an alarm cable (new house - alarm not yet installed but wiring already in place) where the...

Security lights - advice on cable run please

Hi I'm about to install a couple of outdoor security lights. For one of them I'm able to access the back of the lamp going straight through the exterior wall. The other requires a cable run vertically down the outside of the house, with the run originating in the loft. I can't find any...
