    Semi-converting a loft

The spans of the thinner joists are something like 12' and 15' from memory. Would laying another set of joists perpendicular to these be a good way to strengthen the floor, should I feel the need to expand the place? Thanks for your reply Static! Dave

    Semi-converting a loft

Hi I'm looking into boarding out the loft above my 1950s semi to make it into a room where I can escape from the family. You know, board the floor and walls (and insulate behind the wall/roof boards perhaps) and then stick some lights and an old TV and hifi up there, and sit in peace after...

got a neon tester screwdriver? yes? then read this

I usually use these lamps as a backup test - Turn the breaker off and then attack the live with the neon jobbie first, just to be "double" sure. I've had problems with breakers not working, and fuse wire wrapped around the prongs of the socket for the fuse in an older CCU. Likewise, I've had...

Just changed Consumer unit - Having problems with RCD

Hi Today I changed the consumer unit at a relatives house - It was "rewired" in the mid seventies, so a lot of the wiring was fairly shonky. I was doing some renovation to the house and had to add a few sockets and wiring for a Spa Bath - as soon as I saw the existing consumer unit I pretty...
