Bungalow: do I need scaffolding to put in a flue liner?

Never had scaff in the past (gas boiler ages ago, flame-effect maybe 4 years ago). Now a neighbour has had scaff erected to change her flu liner. Is it really necessary, or would the usual ladder do?

Please help identify this Friction Stay Hinge part

Hi, I'm hoping somebody here can identify a small plastic part incorporated into most (all?) so-called 'friction stay hinges'. I have a top hung UPVC window incorporating a rather large such hinge that an angry child swung on, causing a snapping of the part highlighted in the picture. The part...

    How heavy is a 4800 x 250 x 75 C16 timber beam?

"Sources" suggest the density of C16 is ~370Kg/m3 The cubic metreage of the 4800 x 250 x 75 beam is 0.090m3 "Therefore" the beam should have a mass of 370 * 0.09 = 33.3Kg .... yet my timber supplier reckons it's too heavy to lift. Where am I going wrong?

Reinforcing Joist Binders : should BC be involved

I'm doing that mythical five minute job : loft insulation. Trouble is I've noticed some of the hangers/binders in my 1960's bungalow are a tad skinny: on a 4.5x4.5m span ceiling (onto supporting walls), the 100x50x4500mm, 400mm centres joists are being hung off just 2 100x50x4500mm binders...

    Loft "walkway"

Whilst contemplating upgrading loft insulation on my 1960's bungalow, I encountered the usual problems of inspection access (for roof leaks, vermin, electrical junctions, water pipes etc) to a space with joist depths of a mere 100mm. Like a few others, I decided it would be best to have...

    Locked Thread

I sought out this site in order to gain a little advice. I had a problem regarding the interface between roof / ceiling carcassing and supporting masonry walls. As is to be expected, like many on a DIY site, I'm not a tradesman, so had no clear understanding of the demarkation between...

Hanging beams in eaves : bearing onto a wall plate

Hi, tried asking this in "Building" but to no avail. Wondered if the Joiners here might be more forthcoming. Here goes: I am wishing to place a narrow walkway in my loft space above insulation for inspection purposes. Although there will be no imposed load above and beyond a brief annual...

Anchoring Hangers / Binders to Wall Plates in a Hipped Roof

Hi, first post so please be gentle. I am wishing to place a narrow walkway in my loft space above insulation for inspection purposes. Although there will be no imposed load above and beyond a brief annual inspection of rafters, it is my understanding that I should never the less treat any...
